It wasnt a bad day, like always I wish I had gotten more done, but oh well.

Painted chain link fence is really ugly!
The dude had an 87 vette parked sideways in the drive (around here vette equals a55 hole) he came out of the house with an attitude, I was already headed to the truck but the bil asked what his best price was. He confirmed my hunch when he opened his mouth. It's still listed.

I got four pieces of metal on the roof of the coop, it was racked a bit so I put a come a long on it and pulled it a little. Then it started raining again, guess I'll try again tomorrow.

I went and got my metal this morning, it was a mad house there some truck driver parked like he owned the lot so everyone sat for an hour. Got my stuff and headed home. I stopped by the welding shop to pick up a piece of steel, they gave me a stack of pallets while I was there.
20210610_133507.jpg when I sorted out the metal I was short 14 pieces. I called the office and a half hour later they called me back and said they found it, so back in the truck and back to the store. While we were there the bil found some damaged metal and went to the office to get a price, another hour.
Got back home and finished sorting the metal.

The pallets came in handy.
20210610_133453.jpg
I'm thinking these pallets may be the new roof for my shed.
20210610_174621.jpg
I did get the roof metal finished.

That's it for today, I'm tired and it misted all afternoon so I'm wet and things are starting to cling where they shouldn't, So to quote a great american, it's time for a shower(Uncle Willy)

The rain was coming down again today.
I got a call from the bil this morning, he said he was at work and was about to take one of there older road trucks to the dealership and pick up a new one.
It had full tanks of fuel so I grabbed my truck, a 5 gallon can and my transfer pump. I was down to almost empty so we filled my truck and the can, the owner was fine with it. I took the can to Donnies and poured it in the tractor.

Eric keeps a couple of his monkeys at the office, this one loves the mechanic.

I have this 6' roll of insulation taking up room in the shop so I cut 12 pieces 23" wide to put in the ceiling of the coop to help keep the sun from heating it too much. I have some foam board that is going in the walls.
Sounds like a lot of work but temperature regulation and light regulation will keep the eggs coming almost all year long.
I have to help the bil tomorrow so maybe Sunday I'll get back to it.

I keep checking in and just smiling.

love the way you also stretch your dollars.

often I get more pleasure out of thesaving than the actual item, weird that.

I think that even with a lottery win, I would not change the way I operate.

Its not about the money, but rather the chase for me.

pallets look like a great result.

Amazing how some people do not see free cash as an incentive.

to me, a few hours, netted a pile of cleaned up lumber.
thanks to my dad, teaching us how to remove nails, and how to straighten them.

The majority of this pile of wood is now cleaned and awaiting use in my back yard.

I hauled almost 1400 lbs of shred to the scrapper today, I was going to take a pic but my dump trailer went up and would not come back down. I couldn't figure it out and the line was backing up so I loosened the hydraulic line and let it sink.

We go through about 2 dozen eggs every week so I'm hoping they can produce.

You got it, I could go buy it all but the chase is the fun part. I was given those 10' pallets not knowing what I would do with them. I think they will work for my shed roof, now I'm on the hunt for a few more. Nice pile of lumber, Keep smiling buddy.

I helped the bil load the scrap at his house then we went to my place and loaded mine then a quick trip to the recyclers yard ( my bil's soon to be bil ownes the yard) then back to the bil's house to dig the hillside back from the garage about 8' to allow enough room to set a box truck body that he is going to use for storage. The tractor did a good job until we hit the tree roots, we really need another 6' back, will have to see if the bil will pay for a stump grinder.
Went to two estate sales this afternoon, nouthing I couldn't live without.
Got the monthly report finished and printed an addenda for lodge meeting tonight. Lots of business to handle.
Now I'm going to try and get a nap before I leave at 6:15

Fresh eggs and chicken **** for your garden and planting areas seems like a good reason to have them around. I heard they tend to smell more than a little so having it so close to your new gazebo party area might not be the best, but maybe you have sweet smellin chickens in Tennessee.

hope you are having a great weekend and maybe a little sunshine next week for both of us will help us finish up a few projects.

cheers

I think it will be ok, there are 120,000 chickens at the next door neighbors house. He just built 6 new broiler houses. They put 20,000 in each house every 6 weeks.

The rain, I dont think it is going to rain every day next week

Free pallets have never been my thing, but the price of lumber has me thinking about them more and more. Looks like you have been able to keep busy….

Yep, every six weeks the semi trucks start rolling in and the chicken wranglers start filling the cages and stack them on the flatbeds, that takes all night. They clean and replace the floor material then add new chicks. Cha-Ching every six weeks.
Tony
I did not but they are local to me so I can check on them if you would like.

I'm with you on the pallets, I would have put plywood inside the coop but that ain't happening. The ten ft. pallets are looking like ready made roof panels that I will just need to trim the ends to fit and install the metal.

The hay barn at the chicken farm caught on fire yesterday, there were close to 20 fire trucks and tankers working the fire. Some of them were there all night, it's hard to extinguish hay and there are no water mains or hydrants in this area. It is a big smoldering mess today.

Very few hydrants here too... but we have stream periscopes that dip into their water supply... so they can fill a tanker quickly (sort of). All the forestry trucks use chemical foam to start their effort too. It was a HUGE deal for a local development... 30ish houses... they were required to install a hydrant... that was an epic effort getting the right pipe there.

My bil has a sulfer well and has been working with the co. commissioner to get water and hydrants down here for the past year. They had a grant to do the work and it got used to redo the last project that was more sprinkler system than water main. So this will only add fuel to the fire, the barn was owned by a well known attorney for this area so I'm sure he well be in favor of getting something done.
We are the last street in the county, almost on the county line so we are always the last to get assistance.
The biggest problem is they will have to cross a water way either way that they try to get here. The tree huggers dont like the snails to be disturbed.

My dump takes more power to lower than to raise. Was your battery strong?

When I was a teen, one of the local dairy farms had a hay fire. Pile was about 50'x80'x20'. Burned for more than a 1 day. FD just made sure nothing else burned.

One of my part time jobs in high school was loading chickens at a farm like that.
God Awful smell! The ammonia from the chicken chit burned your eyes, nose and throat.
But it paid good!

That is something I was going to check, but I didnt know it took more power to lower it.
I'm going to add a power wire to the harness to help with charging.
Since I already had power run to the back bumper for an anderson connector for jumper cables it was a simple matter to make a corresponding connection to the trailer battery to power trailers

I got a little done today.
20210616_143819.jpg
I put the insulation in the roof and put up four sheets of osb.
20210616_152112.jpg
Pat gave me some help holding it up so I could get a couple of screws in it.
20210616_152123.jpg
Tomorrow I will start on the siding.
20210616_152340.jpg
I charged the dump trailer, tomorrow I will need to go under it and tighten the hydraulic lines and see if it will work. I have a spare power unit if needed.
Donnie said he had some Anderson couplers on pigtails for a winch he took off his gooseneck, he is going to find them for me.
20210616_115825.jpg
I do have a few in stock just in case.

Jim, it appears we have similar battery chargers. Yours seems to have more features than mine. Perhaps dual (6 & 12) voltage? Mine has been a life-saver with its ability to start the car without having to wait. I see you customized yours with a longer handle while I customized mine with a much shorter handle (so it fits under the garage cabinets).

Nice job on the coop so far. Are you going to leave the hose wheel in the coop? Having the hydrant near the coop will be nice.

A good job on the ceiling insulation, did you have to take-out a mortgage to purchase the OSB?

I've never-had one of those old battery charger ones that's a booster too. I do have a Schumacher 6/12 V that has a low/high setting, though the 'high' isn't 'engine starter' rated, like yours and Bob's checkered-flag Sears. A couple of years ago, I asked for a Deltran Battery Tender at Christmas, which does-have the booster rating for immediate starts. It recently **** the bed, and I contacted this fine Florida company, the warranty woman said, "send me a picture of the 120 V plug leads cut on your unit," I did, and I received a BNIB unit from them in about 5 days. This one works, and now I have an electronic gadget to disassemble and inspect for the fun of it. I don't expect to trouble-shoot it to restore its function. Plus, I have a spare set of the battery clamp leads and a good 120 V male plug wire to use somehow.

The Schumacher must-be close-to 60 years old, and I have to believe I've used it on every-one of my battery-using means of conveyance: cars, trucks, motorcycles, lawnmowers, but I've never had a powered boat. I got it in the mid-1960's, when I helped my older brother clean-out a business his landlord/boss had bought, a funeral home. It was in the hearse garage, so it probably was used on only Cadillacs. Today, it still works fine.

Bob,
They look very similar and yes mine has 6 volt and I believe 200 amp boost. I did a lot of 47 1/2 to 55 chevy trucks back in the day and I had to have the 6 volt charger, many of them were still running 6 volt, some I hybridized to 12 volt battery and charging system but kept the 6 volt gauges and fuel sender.
X,
Yes it will be about a foot out in front of the coop. If we had kept the garden I was going to move it thankfully that wont need to happen. I got luckey, 2 sheets of the osb were in my shop they were left over I only paid about 7.00 each for them and the other two I got for free when I answered an add on marketplace for free wood. So really luckey on that one.

Driftpin,
I need to get one of those and mount it to the trailer, as I understand it they are a float charger and after charging the revert to maintenance mode.

I had a rash of interruptions today. I also started a new student today and had to spend a couple of hours with him, plus I went and got a load of pallets, but I still got a bunch done on the coop.

This is what I call rabbit wire, I bent it in my aluminum brake and nailed it around the bottom and it will get some soil on top so it will for the most part disappear. This helps keep varments and snakes out of the hen house.
20210617_175946.jpg
The left side finished.
20210617_183304.jpg
The right side finished.
20210617_175948.jpg
The back will be fairly straight forward. It will be 5 sheets centered on the back with a small filler on each end.
