Thanks for all of the well wishes guys, 2023 is looking pretty good through my windshield!

Drives, that cheesecake comes out perfect every time, it is a unique recipe that I worked out years ago but it is great, I use Mexican vanilla so it colors the filling a little dark but it's the best, it cooks for an hour, shut off the oven, crack the oven door for one minute, shut the door for another hour, then set on counter to cool before refrigerating! I'll copy the recipe and post if anyone is interested.

Logan, that's good info that I need, because I dont have a clue about this, you and Kay are probably going to regret me buying this thing!

Jim, Happy new year!

Thanks for the post in my thread the other day. I've followed along with your thread quietly for a few years. It's impressive.
You do some quality work.

I'm thinking of this for my first purchase, I need something here when I get ready, 18.99 dollars?
That's good. It's good to start out with something that isn't too expensive but not cheap. Cheap equals poor quality. It can reek havoc when your printing. I use Hatchbox brand.

Gonna have to try that cheesecake recipe, thanks for sharing!

As for the filament, I've had success with Hatchbox, Overture and Sunlu brands all ordered from Amazon. Most of what I print now is with either Prusament or the "Jessie" series filament from www.printedsolid.com. Once you've found a brand/vendor you like, a lot of people just stick with it as if you get into it you can "tune" the printer for that specific filament brand to improve quality, increase speed etc. When I switch brands right now it's often for color related reasons

The specialty stuff like glow in the dark, wood fiber, metal embedded or the flexible stuff often takes extra patience to figure out, so be aware. Many of them are also abrasive on the nozzle so if you run a lot of those down the road have spare nozzles handy, for standard PLA/PETG it takes a lot of rolls to bore out a nozzle enough it matters.

Biggest issue I've had that was filament related though was due to moisture. Filament works best when it's dry so you should always be getting it in a vacuum sealed bag with a desiccant pouch in it, I try and keep it in that bag until ready to run it. When I'm done and not going to use it for awhile (several days to a week or more) I'll try and remember to unload the filament and stick it back in a sealed container with a desiccant pouch to try and keep it try. I've got some reusable cereal box size containers that hold 1 roll each as well as some 5 gal buckets to hold multiple rolls. Will see if I can get pictures up later. Moisture pickup from the air isn't as big of a deal here in winter with humidity what it is...but definitely something to watch for summer or in more humid locations

Jim,
If you have a dehydrator you can set it to dry out the filament before using.
You could make a box with a low wattage incandescent light bulb and store you filament in that.
I store my filament in reusable vacuum sealing bags, put a pack of desiccant in the bag and pull a vacuum.

Thanks for posting the cheese cake recipe. I think the REAL Mexican vanilla makes a big difference in the taste.
I would be really interested in your long island recipe if your willing to share. I would like to compare it to mine. My favorite sweet and sour was discontinued many years ago and I have not found one that I like as much.

Just fyi my bride makes vanilla. 2 ingredients are vanilla beans and vodka. Vanilla beans last for many refills of vodka (nope I’m not dipping in the jar for sips).

Best of luck with the 3D stuff. I have watched a lot of YouTube vids with baking soda combined with super glue fixes in case you hadn’t heard or seen any (sort of like welding only with plastic stuff).

Thanks for the recipe and send more as you can cause you seem to know how to make tasty stuff.

68400Bird, I have tried the sweet and sour and personally I like this recipe, I was able to adjust the tequila and lemon down to my tast. Good luck with it. Back in the day I had a 68 Bird with a 455 HO, it had
16-55-15s on the rear, I had the most beautiful set of 15" wide posi burn out marks in the road in front of my house always!

Drives, I did the vodka vanilla and it was good, but the mexican vanilla is just way better, the only thing is it's dark, very dark, it dosnt bother me but some folks would freak out if there baked goods were off color. And you are right on not sampling the sauce, it dosnt tast good at all!
Thanks for the tip on the 3D bondo, I haven't heard of that one.
I'm glad you like my recipes, I do consider myself somewhat of a professional eater so I'm always in search of the best of the best, but I have been told that I have a weird tast bud at times!

Oh, no recipe, go to an authentic mexican grocery and get the stuff made in mexico.

Pat made a coconut pie for dessert tonight, I put the bowl and whisk for the kitchen aid mixer in the freezer for 30 minutes, got it out and onto the mixer, added 1½ cups heavy cream two heaping tablespoons of powered sugar and a cap of vanilla, turn on high for a couple of minutes. The very best whipped cream on earth!

I worked in the shop today, I have a couple of projects that need to get done before the 20th.
20230105_140043.jpg
I had this tool box and dont need it so I had it for sale and apparently no one else wanted one either! I saw one on the internet that a guy made into a wall cabinet so I thought I may try to do the same with mine.
Then I had an epiphany! #1, I needed a way to keep a large amount of chicken feed on hand that mice cant get to and #2, I needed a larger feeder for my 15 chickens, the typical feeder you get from tractor supply or rural king only holds two coffee cans of pellets that's one day!
20230105_140049.jpg
So I started cutting.
20230105_140100.jpg
20230105_145707.jpg
Then I started boxing in the latching mechanism.
20230105_155014.jpg
Then I cut a plate to make a sloping floor to make the pellets flow to the front.
20230105_164143.jpg
I fully welded everything so that no pellets would get in and settle somewhere where they didnt need to be.
20230105_182820.jpg
I made a trough, sloping to the front, it is bolted in place just in case it needs to be modified.
That's as far as I got today. My thought is to put a front panel in place that is about two ft. high, then place a screen on top. I think it will hold about 150 lbs of pellets in the hopper and hopefully three bags will set on the screen, 50 lb bags each.
I will cut a slot in the lid down by the drop bin and box it out to keep mice from accessing the inside of the cabinet. If they get in the hopper that's as far as they can go. The chickens will take care of them as long as they can get to them.
I would have got more done but I heard something eating my shop.
20230105_142651.jpg
I went around back and surprised a squirrel eating a large hole above my A/C.
20230105_142707.jpg
I grabbed an old piece of flashing and framed around the unit, I need to get the back door cut in and finish the siding so they dont have easy access to the wood.

That feeder is genius! You sir are my hero. Make sure you post when it's done. I want to see that sucker in "action". 🤔 Now you got me looking for dirt cheap beat up boxes on the market hahah.

How goat proof do you think that is. Could they get into where the feed will eject?

BoostingAz, I think if it had a hood over the slot it would be goat proof, we will look at that when I cut the front slot.

Griz, I paid five dollars for the tool box back in the 1980s, it lived on my chevy dually for a while, then it's been in my way ever since.

Kirk, it's a standard crossbox/ toolbox for a truck, not quite six ft. ?

Ok, after thinking on it for a day, I decided I didnt like the drop chute.
20230105_182811.jpg
So I cut it out and started over.
20230107_134239.jpg
This design looked much better to me, it will give the chickens more head room.
20230107_154154.jpg
I had to narrow the striker it was hitting the latch housing. I also cut the stiffener in the door back to clear the latch housing.
20230107_161028.jpg
I trimmed both stiffeners
Up to 14".
20230107_182823.jpg
Then I welded a 2½" strip of metal across the door, this passes just under the front plate of the hopper, this baffle will prevent mice and other critters from being able to get inside the box.
20230107_172437.jpg
I layed out the opening in the door and with a hole saw I cut the corners.
20230107_182840.jpg
I used a cut off wheel and finished the opening. I added a piece of round rod to the bottom of the opening.

With the door shut everything lined up real nice. I had to do some grinding and clean up but it all works like it should.
20230107_182807.jpg
Since this was a truck tool box, the buttons to open the door are on the top and the bottom now, not easily accessible. I cut a slot in the side of the box and cut the covering back to access the control rod, I welded this tab to it and now the release handle is at a comfortable level on the side. I will finish it a little later.
20230107_183258.jpg
So that's as far as I made it today. I am hoping to finish tomorrow.

I keep chipping away at it, I'm still on slow time and cant seem to get back up to speed.

I finished the bin front today.
20230108_152001.jpg
I still need to cut a piece of screen to go on top of the bin.
20230108_151947.jpg
There is a 1" angle iron frame at the top for the grill to set in.
20230108_122740.jpg
I needed a handle and this old piece of a treadmill was just the ticket.
20230108_125850.jpg
Now I need to sand and paint.
20230108_151938.jpg
I did paint the inside but I ran out of paint so I'll need to go to town tomorrow and get more so I can finish the outside.

I'm late to the party wishing you a Happy New Year, but there's still plenty of 2023 left right?

I need to study up on those 3D printers and see if it's something I would get a lot of use out of. Do you have a lot of projects lined up for it, or do you want me to send you mine? Haha.

Jay, got the paint late today, I'm hoping to get it painted by Wednesday, I hope.

Shopnut, happy new year!
I have been needing a 3D printer for years, I'm always trying to put two things together that were never intended to go together, so I'm hoping to make lots of widgets.
Now I just need to figure out how to make it work!

Lenny, I'm going in for knee revision on the 20th, I'm sure I will get some seat time for about a month or so, that should give me a good start.

20230110_180552.jpg
I made some nose molding today from part of the old back door frame that I removed from the back porch. This will go on my steps after I put the laminate on them, I'm hoping the oak will keep things from splintering.
20230101_135014.jpg
Hopefully I'll get to install them tomorrow.

Steps are looking good. Help my memory, were you going to add cabinets to the same wall? Is your aim to get the steps done before the surgery? IF my memory is correct, is that a before or after surgery project?

The steps and a hand rail before surgery, that's a must. Then we are going to shop around for about 10' of cabinets and a small pantry cabinet/Broom closet for that wall, not in a hurry for them.
I need the handrail for sure and I would like to get the chicken feeder done so Pat dosnt have to carry feed bags,
she did remind me that she knew how to feed chickens!
