I got to play in the shop today, Josh and I have been working on his Ford Ranger that he uses for hunting.
I'm working on a front winch bumper and he wanted a couple of clevis' to double his cable back to, so I found this tractor draw bar in the warehouse! I cut it in half and drilled a couple of holes in it, now they will be bolted to the frame and the bumper will be formed around them.

Kirk they look way overkill but I've seen pictures of Josh winching straight up a wall, when he is bear hunting he goes way back off of the trail. I dont want my parts to be the reason he dosnt get out. I even tried to get him to double the size of his winch but he likes the one he has!

How're you going to attach them to the vehicle? With those being that stout, I'm guessing the attachment point will be your weak link.

They will bolt through the side to the frame, then be welded to the back plate of the new bumper that is also bolted to the frame, it will have at least four ½" bolts holding the bumper to the frame when done, the back plate is part of an I- beam that was heavily trimmed. I'll get some pics as I go!

Maybe put a plate on the inside of the frame to sandwich it? If he's going that nuts.

Yep, that's where the piece of I-beam comes into play. He pushes down trees to get where he wants to go so I had to think like a tank mechanic!
I didnt have room to build hand rail so I finished the chicken feeder and painted it.
It's going in a chicken coop so it isnt glass smooth and I didnt bodywork any of the dents, I just took a worn out 36 grit disc on an angle grinder and kinda blended the rust and powder coat smooth.

The cup gun hasn't seen any love in a while so I took it apart and cleaned it.
She's a jewel, roughly a 1980s vintage but still sprays like a new one.
Tomorrow we'll get the feeder out of the shop and I can clean up the mess and build a hand rail.

I think you're selling those chickens short. I think they're going to be really upset the feeder doesn't have better body work done on it. Seriously though, It's much higher style than anything I'd make for her ducks. Well done.

Bob, our banana trees were doing real good, until it frosted, its funny to see a 15' banana tree turn to mush overnight!
It got our kumquat trees also. I'll send you some eggs if you send me some bananas!

I got the bil to come help me move the feeder so I could work on my handrail today.
Donnie had a couple of old hand rails laying out back in the archives, I cut them apart.
I started cutting the old square tube to leinght and I noticed a split in one, it had filled with water and froze, so I scrapped them.
I went to my archives and got a stick of new 1" square tube.
I welded the two pieces of top rail together at the correct angle and smoothed it off.
The cardboard to the left is a tracing of the steps, I used it to set the height and angle of the rail on the right.
Pat called, supper is ready, Bye!

I was at a produce auctions years ago and boxes of bananas were cheap, like less than a couple bucks. Brought them home, sorted, saved some to eat, froze some and fed the rest to the chickens. They went bananas for them! The chickens now get any extra bananas at my house!

Kirk, there is more food in this house than some grocery stores have, if there arnt any leftovers, Pat will whip you up a meal, come on. She is making Salisbury steaks right now from some of that beef we had processed last month!
I finished the hand rail today.
Donnie gave me a couple of old pieces he had out back.
I cut them apart and decided I only wanted the top rail.
I got a stick of 1" square tube and cut my frame.
The cardboard is a template of my steps, I used it to set my height and angle.
Then I grabbed a stick of ¾" and cut some pickets and welded them in.
I have a box of these feet that I cut for stock. So three got welded on.
It's all done, I'll take it to Dalton tomorrow and have him powder coat it gloss white.
Just when you think you are making progress, the roll pin in your drill press handle breaks and just like that! Another project! ****!
Also I sold the big red enclosed trailer today, now I can clean up the car port and maybe park some trucks in it, a novel idea!

I have been seeing people on the internet cut the root off of things and plant them, so I had to try it.
Pat made a salad with Romaine lettuce a couple of days ago that she bought at the grocery store, I took the root and stuck it in a flower pot on the back porch, dang thing has grown about 2" already.
I just stuck it in the pot about five days ago.

That's what I was thinking!
I know how this works and have divided roots and all that, it just never dawned on me to set a lettuce root in a pot, and how fast it grew. I put a celery root in the pot yesterday!
Reminds me that I have to dig all of the hostas and divide them this spring.

Great work on the railing and stairs!!
I too have seen a ton of great ideas on the internet and instagram about how to not only grow your own food but how to use the scraps to start them.
Best of luck on your knee surgery and it might slow you down for a few weeks even though they usually make you walk the next day but if you keep it moving and do the rehab hopefully it will work like it did when you were a teenager.

Drives, this one is scar tissue revision, it's going to be day surgery, so I'm hoping it's not as bad as the first time.

Well I knew the time was getting close so I put a light bulb in the chicken coop last week. The hens are five months old and it's time to earn there keep. Chickens will lay when they have around 15 hours of light daily, it dosnt have to be sunlight just light.
I'm so proud!
Josh and I moved the laying box and installed the new feeder today, and I forgot to get a pic. It worked well, I put 100 lbs of feed in it and it isnt half full, I'm going to the feed store tomorrow!
I got back to Josh's bumper, these are the bars I drilled last week to accept the clevis'
I bolted them to the frame and welded them to the I-beam plate.
The plate bolt is rusty, it's been there for a couple of months, the bar mounting bolt is clean.
We cut a piece of steel 61½"x 5½" and ran it all of the way across the bottom front edge, added a 2½"x16" piece to the top front edge, then a filler plate was welded inside, this is an attempt to keep the bumper from denting when he pushes trees down.
I welded inside to help keep it together, capped the ends.
Top plates were cut, you can see the reinforcement plated inside at this angle pretty good.
Welded, and ground smooth.
Then we took the bumper off and put it on the welding bench, I'll finish welding the back and grind everything smooth, and get it to powder coat before lunch!
Donnie said they had a slow day tomorrow and I may get it back tomorrow, that would be great.

I didnt weigh it but I can carry it so not as bad as it looks.
I got that call today! A nurse from the facility that is doing my surgery called and asked all of the same questions again that I answered online twice! Then she informed me that I had to get an EKG and blood work today! So I jumped on the bumper and got it done, I took it to the powder coat shop and came home and showered, then off to Ooltawah, the closest facility of theres to get said tests, four hours later I'm back home. Dalton wanted to go to the lodge and install the new TV we bought a couple of weeks ago, so I gathered some tools and went and picked him up and headed to the lodge. The old bolt holes lined up so we were finished in about 20 minutes and left.
I was in such a rush today I didnt get a pic of anything, so maybe tomorrow I can catch up.
