Toolbox. Something he can fill with his own tools as he finds what he needs. Not a big cabinet box or anything just a starter box. Something like this

Also, anytime I start a project in the house, it seems I need my cordless drill, cordless impact or cordless circ saw. If I was just starting out, those would be the tools I'd want someone to give me.

I'd give him a decent staple gun too.

A couple of rolls of blue tape, a roll or two of teflon tape, shop vac of some sort, a decent 6' fiberglass ladder, an auto center punch, tack hammer, good pair of needle nose pliers in 8" or so...

you just need to bite the bullet and walk onto the snap on truck with an open checkbook. the snappy man will make sure he has everything he will ever need.

Sounds like they need more help/advice at this point. Really hard to tell what kinda tools they need until you find out what they're good at. If he aint comfortable working with electricity then maybe you need to offer electrical assistance rather than tools? Once he gets some experience and you see what he's capable of then you'll know what kinda tools he needs.

Ive had him assist with some work around our place - so I've figured out he has the basics - he knows which end of the screwdriver to hold on to and he understands screws / nuts / bolts -- so he can assemble that Ikea bookshelf just fine....but I have no confidence he knows the difference beteen the black and white wires behind the receptacle.....I know I will be called to assist on stuff like that.

I'd throw in a short sleever bar - I brought an old one home, and I've found it to be the indispensable household tool of the century.
:thumbup: like one of these?http://www.lowes.com/pd_348331-414-...br|0||p_product_qty_sales_dollar|1&facetInfo=
I gave my son-in-law this set:

If/when he figure out that they aren't real tools, I'll see about getting him something more substantial.
:)

Baby steps . . .

:bounce: I would do that, but there's allready been some tension between him and my daughter when she assumed he was incapable of doing anything mechanical and said she would "call Daddy to come over" to put up shelves and stuff...appearently he got pretty indignant and said "I CAN DO IT....I just done have any tools yet!".....:lol_hitti

No, sleevers are round, or more often hex stock that have a pointed end like a spud.

The one I use at home now is a 16" Wilde like this one:

USA made and only $7.25! You'd never believe how handy these things are around the house. I keep a spud Crescent and a small bull pin in the garage now too, just for helping force things together.
