A kit like that is just as bad as the big old craftsman sets. A bunch of stuff you will never use and missing a ton of stuff you will.
In the days of my youth I'd look at Craftsman and Snap On tool catalogs in great depth.

I would honestly rather piece together the best from all the different tool makers.
Based on my own experience I'd venture an educated guess that those sets are bought more by large companies or gov agencies than by individual users.

It's pretty well understood that people overwhelmingly buy the "medium" size of anything, regardless of the actual quantity or price. Retailers will therefore have a high priced item that's not there to sell, but rather to increase sales of the next one down. It works.It's just a marketing ploy. They have to have one big granddaddy set so buyers feel like they are compromising when they buy the next set down.
