Just curious about your experiences if you've ever rented out your place for a movie or commercial shoot, or even events like weddings or parties. The idea got stuck in my head after seeing that Magnus Walker documentary, clearly he's doing it on a very large scale but he does make a good living from it. Been playing with the idea of putting the word out about my garage and house, some scenic parts of the property as well. There's a few websites apparently where you can list your property with photos, but I haven't gone any further than that yet. Thoughts?

the movie project x springs to mind here. but scenic patxhes of property could be good for wedding venues with small parties.

I know some people who have.

For the most part, you need to have a place that is really 'plain Jane' or really unique.

It's not something you can make a living at....

It can be really good money, I worked at this one house in Pasadena they were paying the owner 15k a day. My mom has rented out her driveway a few times, only for like $100. I've noticed that people in Los Angeles are pretty savy when dealing with payment for using there homes, work to shoot at. Other parts of the country the people almost do it for free. One instance I remember in Detroit a man let the production company use his parking lot for free.

On a side note I've done my fair share of messing up a house or too while shooting inside. Not on purpose. But **** happens.

But some towns have a film office where you can register and upload pictures of your area for production to use.

I know of a business in Santa Fe, NM that rented out some property for props, old western wagons, etc. Had to take the film company to court to get paid, over 2 years to get fully paid.

I'd suggest money in advance with damage clauses, etc.

Be very careful about things like damages and clean up. Also make sure there is a date when they have to be gone.

Specify penalties in the contract.

2 cases I was involved with, and have heard of others similar-
They will TELL you that everything will be put back perfectly and better than it was ever before. They will do a really crappy job of cleaning up, no promises will be kept, no schedule will be adhered to, and some of them are just arrogant snobs. I am sure others have had good experiences, I would request double what I thought it was worth and the terms are CIA.
Cash In Advance.
Yes, you are right, it did not go well for us, LOL.

A neighborhood down the street from us had a movie filmed there. They ended up with one of the nicest baseball fields around. Movie didn't do too well though.

Thanks for the insight! Might be something worth thinking about for next year.
