My impression is that most people who need a serious impact go for either the 14.4 or 18v instead of the 9.6v. Panasonic is another liked brand.

All depends on what you intend to use it for, and what you have available. I needed to take the bolt off an oil pump pulley the other day, one of those only an impact will do it jobs. Since it was handy I tried my Bosch PS40, nothing. Tried a SnapOn I think CT14410 (something like that), nothing. Other mechanic walks up disgusted with a SnapOn 3/8 air impact and its off on the first blip, his comment was that batteries are for vibrators.

I have the same one, only it's 12volt.It works great,I have about a 3 inch bit extention holder on it,with a phillips ACR bit on it that I use all the time.
The drawbacks are the rubber grip doesn't hold up to solvents at all,and falls apart. The footprint of the battery is so small,it gets knocked over very easily. It takes the knocks ok,but the weak link in it is how the battery clips on.All of the weight of the battery is hung on the 2 little push-clips,and if you drop it,the battery clips break.
Duct tape holds it on if that happens, yet it always looks like a wounded tool that way.The battery costs around $60.00,though. They hold a charge for several days.
That's what Snap-on's latest design has improved on,as their batteries slide on so the weight of the battery it supported by the long slide channel, not just the 2 clips.
I also have the same 12v Dewalt, that has the 3/8in square drive, instead of the square bit chuck.I like how very light both of these are.

excellent tool, but go for the 18v version as I think that will give the best versatiliy as you add other tools to the collection

I've got a craftsman pro 18v 1/2" square impact. Not enough power for a compressor at home. Works just fine, they can be had on ebay for fairly cheap, it's the batteries and charger that cost. They no longer sell the impact on the sears website (as least last time I checked), but they do sell the batteries and chargers.

Probably comes from the same Chinese factory as Milwaukee, Bosch, and Hitachi. (except on the Bosch box it says Made in P.R.C.................. Peoples Republic of China!..... they must think they're clever.)
