I'm finalizing the blueprints for my spring garage build.
28 x 36, half loft trusses, have scissors, 8 pitch. Went to a home remodeling show and came across a Velux Cabrio Balcony Roof mounted window and fell in love with it.
(Can't post a link here yet as I'm a newbie.)

Necessary, no. Cool, expensive, yes. I really want it and am seriously considering having the pitch bumped up to accommodate this (requires 35 degrees or 8.4 min pitch to work properly)

I love the idea of being able to have a little spot to look out from above into the yard. I doubt that I'd use it that often, but I like unique things and the design of this is pretty fantastic.

Anyone here have any experiences with one of these, good or bad?

Thanks much!

I put a velux in my bathroom over 20 years ago. I really like the extra light. I had to reseal the exterior (the seal where the edge meets the glass) after about 20 years. It started to drip and the repair was easy. As far as quality I would recommend it.

I would rather have a dormer and french casement. I have used skylights -- don't really like them on pitched roofs. That contraption is only usable on perfect days -- a dormer is always there to walk into and look out.

I have taken them out and on one repaired and replaced normal roof. Other built two dormers. As I remember, there are little levers and springs and pins, and when they stopped working smooth they were impossible to fix.
