Yes Brianh, that's one way to make a chisel. But I gotta ask, did you do the final step of heat treating the tip to reform the Austenite grain structure disrupted and softened by the heat and vibration of grinding the edges angular slope into the metal? Without the restored grain structure the tip will be vulnerable to deformation, have only a fraction of its previous ability to resist impact stress, and using the tool in this sub-prime condition will only cause further and increased softening.
I won't get into the heat treatment procedure here simply because searching 1095 or 1074 heat treatment ASTM data sheet will get everyone their own copy in short enough order, so this post will detail how to blacksmith a chisels from common shaped metal stock. This tool is made mainly but not exclusively from leaf springs, coiled carriage springs (Flattened then cut), and just about any ******* file old or new.
Making a Chisels Angled Cutting Edge:
I am assuming you were able to evenly flatten the piece to form a long rectangle having at least one flush vertical end perpendicular to the face laying against the anvil. First, place the flat bar at, but not over, the anvils edge on its top flat surface. Strike with the face of the hammer contacting the flat bars top corner at as close to the angle you desire the chisels edge to be as possible. As the flattening metal slide closer to or over the anvils edge you must correct the distance to make sure no metal extends beyond the anvils corner at the moment of hammer impact.
Breaking this one absolute rule in chisel forming will cause the hammer impact to imprint the 90 degree corner into the once flat underside of the chisel. Next step, get another flat bar and start over most likely.
