Has anyone made wood chisels from scratch?

I'm thinking of making a set of wood chisels for my future brother in law who is a contractor. I figured it would be something unique rather than the typical wedding gift.

They probably will be mainly ornamental, but I still want to make them fully functional. I'm thinking O1 tool steel, a moderate heat treat, maybe 48 to 52 RC. CNC engrave his name on them, hickory handle, and a P20 tool steel strike plate.

So has anyone ever built a set?

Iv seen a guy use old leaf spring to make his wood chisels.

Yes I have made a few from concrete nails to truck springs old files hold a real nice edge but are a bit brittle one of my favorite eye carving chisels is from a forged drywall screw.

Have a few pictures of a truck spring chisel found the spring in the road.

Yes Brianh, that's one way to make a chisel. But I gotta ask, did you do the final step of heat treating the tip to reform the Austenite grain structure disrupted and softened by the heat and vibration of grinding the edges angular slope into the metal? Without the restored grain structure the tip will be vulnerable to deformation, have only a fraction of its previous ability to resist impact stress, and using the tool in this sub-prime condition will only cause further and increased softening.

I won't get into the heat treatment procedure here simply because searching 1095 or 1074 heat treatment ASTM data sheet will get everyone their own copy in short enough order, so this post will detail how to blacksmith a chisels from common shaped metal stock. This tool is made mainly but not exclusively from leaf springs, coiled carriage springs (Flattened then cut), and just about any ******* file old or new.

Making a Chisels Angled Cutting Edge:
I am assuming you were able to evenly flatten the piece to form a long rectangle having at least one flush vertical end perpendicular to the face laying against the anvil. First, place the flat bar at, but not over, the anvils edge on its top flat surface. Strike with the face of the hammer contacting the flat bars top corner at as close to the angle you desire the chisels edge to be as possible. As the flattening metal slide closer to or over the anvils edge you must correct the distance to make sure no metal extends beyond the anvils corner at the moment of hammer impact.
Breaking this one absolute rule in chisel forming will cause the hammer impact to imprint the 90 degree corner into the once flat underside of the chisel. Next step, get another flat bar and start over most likely.

48-52 is too soft, they would lose their edge very fast. Need to be north of 58. I know you said decorative but if they won't be usable then might as well just use mild steel.

If your tool is getting hot when shaping the bevel you're doing it wrong.

No I water cooled it, not hard to do really. First thing you learn sharpening is not to burn the **** out of the steel, it holds an edge very well.

I was reading that extremely hard chisels, usually made of A2 often had issues with edge chipping due to them being so hard. No big deal I can get the O1 hardened to 60 RC easy enough. That's why I come here for advice!

When I was a kid I watched an old semi retired blacksmith make a knife out of an old cross-cut saw blade. He said it was an ideal material for the purpose and he had several old broken cross cut blades that he kept for material. That old man was so strong that he could cut the rough blade out with a hammer and chisel. Most normal people would use a band-saw. I don't know where you might find an old cross cut blade but likely it would work well for chisels as well as knives.
