Has anyone modified Trusses

Just wondering if anyone has ever modified their roof trusses for alittle increased height?

I'm planing a 24x35 (max size I can go) and the builder says they can't do vaulted ceilings because it will make it to tall for the bylaw. I tried to tell them that a vault shouldn't increase outside height if built right but they wont listen.
So I was wondering if I could box out the trusses so I can get 10' clearance for a hoist? Is it possible or am I pooched?

You should be able to get a scissors truss from any truss manufacturer. This page shows typical designs: http://www.trussworksusa.com/truss4.htm

no matter what trusses you get, you can never cut a truss no matter what.

Thanks guys, I know they make them, just lazy builders. I would love to get a different contractors for the garage but because its a corner lot I have to build it with them (but they are giving me a decent price on it.

I might print off that diagram and show them there is no height difference.

There was someone on here, maybe a year or so ago that cut a notch into their trusses to clear a 2 post lift. But he sandwiched the truss, and then drywalled over it.

Curious: Why do you "have" to deal with "them"? Are you building in a new subdivision or a redevelopment or something like that where one contractor owns the entire site?

Why not just use rafters and skip the trusses?

That said, before I started working on my own car, the mechanic I used to take the car to (and still do for weird or complicated jobs) modified his truss roof to gain extra height to use his lift. He had a builder come in, shore up the roof structure with I beams (one in the middle spanning the cut section, supported by two more from the ends and running out to the outside wall with the supporting beams held up by jack posts). Gave him about another 3' or so of height.

Exactly what we're investigating....& the engineers tell me it can be safely done if I'm willing to pay the price to retrofit it.
