Hello all. I'm building a new garage that will be a modernist, mini-museum type of space. To avoid interior door hardware I want to use real carriage doors. (swing doors) Just wondering if anyone has done this. My usual hardware sources are not coming up with attractive choices for hinges, latches, etc., and thought I'd ask before I start welding up my own custom design. I also posted this under "Professionals", I hope that's not bad etiquette. Thanks.

I built a pole barn last year and I put conventional overhead doors on it. The outside is cedar stained T1-11 and all the trim is cedar. My wife didn't want to see the overhead doors so I built doors that will open on hinges. I will put them on this spring. Well, I looked and looked for hinges that would hold the weight. I overbuilt them with 2x4's and T1-11 and cedar trim. They probably weigh at least 100 ponds a piece. I looked at t-strap hinges and hinges that are made specifically made for carriage doors. They all are way too expensive. They were running about $80.00 a piece. I needed (3) for each door, so a total of 12. I finally said to myself, What type of door is big and heavy? Tractor trailer doors are. I bought 14" hinges 1/4"thick plate with bronze sleeves for about $10 bucks apiece. I painte them black, I think they will work great. I'll let you know. I'll try to find the receipt for them tonight.

Here's a picture of some doors I had made
up by a neighbor that does custom wood-
working. I also did not want the interference
with a roll up door because of the small size
of the garage (14X30) I decided to break
them into four sections so when the folded
in they did not take up as much room.
Worked out nice and looks great to me.
