Has this Rock Island 6" been modified?

My quest for a 5" - 6" vise is ongoing.

I came across this. Has this vise been cut up to allow for non-U shaped jaws to be installed?

I wanted to make sure that Rock Island didn't have a version that came from the factory like this. The very few 597 photos I could find had U jaws.

Every Rock Island vise that I have has U jaws but none are this size. There are a few guys here who have the 597. They will surely chime in.

Thanks guys.
I'm sure it would be fully functional, but it would bug me every time I looked at it to think that someone hacked it up. It is not at a "You ****" price so my quest will continue.

Maybe the jaw areas were fubar, it's hard to say why that vise was modified. It doesn't look too badly done. However it looks like jaws are each held on by 3 screws in single shear. For the work you put in a 6" vise...I wouldn't be comfortable with that. I think it was smart to pass.

I have a rock island 94 with forged in jaws. It has so many issue I think I'm going to scrap it. I'm I crazy for doing so?

Issues are as follows:
- The right side tab to bolt it to a bench is gone.
- The back of the slide is missing a quarter sized chunk.
- The screw has been repaired twice outside the threads and is currently broken in the threads.
- The main casting nut has been sheared off at the base and repaired.

I thought about sending the nut to Morgan to see if any of there stuff could work.

Probably why it was scrapped in the first place yank. I sure wouldn't put any time into that. A 94 is no where near rare enough to justify that kind of effort. I have a couple vises that live very near the scrap pile surviving only for the opportunity to donate their few remaining organs. I doubt there is much to donate on a 94 with no spindle screw or nut.
