I got the 4 drawer cart at HF with the $99 coupon supplied by rbrtwhyt

As the guy is wheeling it out to my car he says "we always appreciate tips, that's how we make our living"

I had junk in my back seat and didn't want him to screw up my seats, so I asked him to just leave it. (at a different HF the guy pushed something heavy in my back seat tearing the weather stripping stuff)

He said "so basically you don't want to tip me?"

I wasn't sure what the proper etiquette was

proper etiquette is for him not to ask for a tip... I worked at merchandise pick-up at sears for a year (bringing customer goods out and loading them) and if i accepted a tip it was a fire-able offense, because its a non-tip job just like his (of coarse i did accept tips but i shouldnt have)

I would say no tip is necessary. The fact that you are shopping there is good enough. Plus most other places won't allow the employees to be tipped for loading things in customers cars as its part of their customer service. I know the lowes and home depot by me are like that.

If he had kept his mouth shut=possibly a tip
Once he opened his mouth and asked for a tip= no way

I have always tipped the people that load up my stuff. One guy at HF uncrated a 13 drawer roller, top chest and full length side and loaded it in my van. He did it with a greeat attitude and never hinted at a tip. I did gave him 20 dollars. Had he told me what that guy did I would have gone to the manager.

AFAIK Employees of any of the big retailers (Sears, HD, Lowes) are not supposed to except tips even if they are offered by the customer. I know for a fact a HD employee can be fired for accepting tips if they are caught. I'm not sure what HF's policy is on employees accepting tips but I am sure they are not allowed to soclict them and that tips are not figured into their salary like they are for a waitress.

I wonder how many people that guy has basically pressured into giving him a tip? Seems outrageous.

I would have reported that kind of BS to the store manager.

He obviously has no idea what it's like to make a living off tips. Unless he's paid $2.13/hr, he needs to keep his mouth shut, learn some etiquette, and maybe get motivated to work towards getting a job making a decent living.

I am offered tips on a daily basis at Autozone. We are not supposed to take tips. But a lot of the time you can refuse to take a tip 3 or 4 times and the customer will not take no for an answer. My store manager is ok with this and long as we don't ask and initially refuse a tip.

That's insane.. Even if they're allowed to accept tips (doubtful) - that's ridiculous to ask for one. And I'm sure he makes a full wage..Unlike a waiter/waitress where they only get a few $$'s an hour and rely quite a bit on tips.

When I worked at Wal-mart pushing carts in H.S. - We were not allowed to take tips whenver we helped customers load stuff.

Just like Aussiek2000's situation - There were at least a few times they actually shoved the money in my hand and basically forced me to take it even after explaining that I didn't want it and wasn't allowed to take it anyways.

"Floss daily" is a good tip too.
As far as the proper etiquette, check w/ his store manager.

Yep, I have had a half dozen occasions where the customer put the money in my pocket even after refusing it multiple times.

It would never occur to me to tip a HF employee. I have to say that this is a bit of an issue with me. To me a tip (a gratuity) is something that is earned when you go above and beyond your normal duty. It's not an entitlement. Yet the coffee shops seem to thing a tip is appropriate for handing something over a counter. The guy at the hotel looks for a tip for hauling my bag from the elevator to the front door (about 30') even though I politely tried to decline. I think we're starting to blur the line between service and panhandling here. No way I'd tip that guy.

Agreed. You don't deserve a tip. You earn one.

That said, i always tip the pizza delivery guys.

Give the guy a printed 20% off coupon from HF and let him choose the amount of the tip by what he buys.

i hate tipping. i think its ******** that we're supposed to tip at resturants. i would rather get off my *** and go to the kitchen and get the food myself. i think its ******** that resturants pay thier waiters and waitresses $2.00 an hour and expect them to live off tips. i think its ******** that uncle sam taxes tips. when we eat out i always sign the credit card reciept and give it to the wife so she can leave a tip. i don't go to sonic or any other drive in because i always feel compelled to tip the carhop for bringing me the food.
having said that, if someone goes above and beyond their job i don't have a problem rewarding them or compensating them or whatever. i don't see a waiter or waitress bringing me food from the kitchen, as per her job description, as going above and beyond his/her job. somone loading merchandise into my vehicle is probably going above and beyond thier job, unless i'm at the drive up loading area at nebraska furnature mart or the lumber yard.

I sold christmas trees this past holiday, and I helped someone with their tree 2 minutes before we closed. She showed up 2 minutes before closing, literally. Well I helped her choose a tree, i asked if she wanted it wrapped or anything. All the other places were closed already and my manager told me to tell them to leave, but I said "I will handle it."

Well I was corrected on how to cut the bottom off the tree, I was corrected how to use a pair of loppers, I was corrected how to put it on top of the vehicle, and I didnt get a tip. I wasn't on the clock at this point and my manager had left. After taking all her grief about how bad my service was I spit on her car. I did that while not being on the clock because I thought her kids would like a tree for x-mas. They ended up seeing me spit on her windshield, hop in my car and leave.

Having worked in restrants as a kid (30 years ago) it would irritate me to make minimum wage ($2.75 back then) while waitresses pulled in $15-$25 an hour and drove new cars. I don’t enjoy tipping at restaurants and seldom eat out.
The amount of times I have stayed somewhere with a bellhop I can count on one hand.
Back when I had disposable income I always tipped my masseuse.
Social customs dictate you should tip your barber/stylist.
My wife has cut my hair since I went back to cutting my hair 7 years ago. I don’t give her the TIP, she gets the whole thing.

If some clod at HF asked for a tip, he would get an earful, then I would go back in and talk to the manager. That being said the heaviest stuff I have bought from HF was a winch and a 3 point hitch adaptor. They never offered help loading.

When they start telling me how to do my job i exercise my right to refuse service. Yes, seriously.

Oh, i'm cutting the bottom wrong? Not to worry, we're closed anyway. Goodbye! :)

Begging for a tip would get you no tip.

Waitresses on the other hand often are single moms trying to get by and I gladly tip them and usually tip well.

Just ignore it. He's a flunkie, not because of the job, but because he's dumb enough to ask for a tip.

I do recommend tipping the pizza guy, and more than $1. You don't want to know the things I did to people's food when I was driving pie once I figured out the address was a non-tipper. I feel bad about it, but was younger then.

If single mom is good lookin'; she'll probably get the whole thing, instead of just the tip....:pimpflash:lol_hitti

He should have tipped you for spending that kind of money at HF, allows him to get paid. I am starting to think that because I do my job that I deserve a tip as well.

i think i've seen more half naked women on this forum than any other forum i've frequented! i never thought i would read a thread about harbor freight and see a couple young ladies in bikinis! not complaining, just making an amusing observation.

it kills me to see everyone with their hand out. waiters and waitresses expect a tip. they are distant when they speak at me, not to me. and then i have to ask for a refill on my drink.

i agree w/ everyone else, i'm not giving a tip to someone helping me load my truck. especially if the guy asks for it. i would however call a 1-800 number if i recieved really good service, or tell the manager how much i appreciated good service. figure i'm helping the individual out w/ advancement/ pay raises. it may be a minimum wage job, but it's better than no job in this 'economic climate'.
