I read this earlier today and though I would do some research on it at work. A HFT employee is not to ask or accept tips from any customers, regardless. If they do, they can be fired. As far a loading goes, we don't have to help load anything under 100lbs. If it's over 100lbs, it has to be loaded by at least 2 employees, if possible, or must be loaded with a forklift in the back of the customer's truck or trailer. If a customer asks us to load something heavy into the back of their car, van, or suv, we have the right to refuse and notify the manager at once. If a customer buys something and it doesn't fit into their car, van or suv, the store can not keep that item for the customer until they make arrangements to pick up the item. It must be returned and the customer must rebuy when they get back.

Tipping is one of those situational things. I tip at restaurants, barber shops, pizza delivery, bartenders if the drinks are reasonably priced. I do not tip at sonic's. When you dont give me an option to get my food by myself at a fast food joint, dont expect me to support the waitresses.

I am not supposed to take tips at my job, but if customers hand it to me, I will not refuse. Take it to the bossman and he'll say keep it. Usually people will come in and need a bulb installed or air in their tires. The shop charges 15 bucks to put a bulb in. Most of the time the boss says handle it and I go out and do it in the parking lot and dont charge the customers. The ones that tip, get remembered and the ones that dont get put on the list of 'write up a ticket the next time they need something'.

I had one lady come in and couldnt get her gas door open due to the ice we had. I went out and jiggled/wiggled/pushed it and got it open. She gave me 10 bucks even though it took me 30 seconds. I went and got a pack of smokes and a drink and if she needs anything done at the shop, she will be taken care of.

Was driving my mothers RV from Oklahoma to Arizona a few summers ago and the alternator went out. Dumb me didnt have any tools or another vehicle. No AAA no nothing. All the repair shops were closed. Found the number for a mobile mechanic and rang him up. Told me he'd be out in about an hour and asked if I needed something to drink or smokes before he got there. He arrived, troubleshot the alternator, gave me a ride to advanced auto to buy it and fixed it in less than an hour and a half. He also replaced the belt while it was off which isnt a huge deal, but was nice. He charge me around 100 for the belt and alt install. Ended up giving him a 60 buck tip since he drove all the way to me, brought a pack of smokes and a coke, and didnt waste any time. I still have his card and have given it to a few people who headed out that way.

I'm fairly cheap, and target good service at 10%, and do all in my power to stop tipping from creeping in to new areas of service. My sister is the opposite, and a 20% or 30% tip from her isn't unusual. When we go to one of her regular dining places you would not freaking believe the service we get, its like their long lost mother has walked in.

I would have told the kid, as I carefully loaded my own stuff, Gee this is new to me, lets go talk to your manager so I can figure out a proper tip.

Now how about tipping a tow truck driver?

When the wheel fell off my truck going through MO, the two tow trucks were there less than 30 minutes from the highway patrol calling them, and the town was 25 miles away, and it was the July 4th weekend.

One of them backed down the highway a mile to pickup my tire (I threw it off the road, but I wasn't about to carry it a mile uphill back to the truck.).

They hauled my pickup and car trailer to a shop, I unloaded my pickup (didn't want to leave anything valuable in it), then they gave me a ride to a motel, waited for me to get a room, helped carry my stuff up to the room, then gave me a ride to the bar.

Damn straight I tipped them.

If I get good service, I will tip well. Usually, by the time I walk in the bar, hang my coat on the chair, and get my darts out of my bag, the waitress is bringing me my beer. I usually don't even have time to sit down before it's there. Every time there's an inch of beer left in my glass, another one magically appears. I never have to ask, never have to worry about trying to get a drink in the middle of a dart game. It doesn't matter how many times I move around to different tables by different machines, my beer always appears where I'm at. She usually gets a 30-40% tip.

On the other hand, one place I went to a bit ago, the waitress showed up to take the order, and dropped off the bill. I had to go to the bar 3x to get my ice tea filled. Her "tip" was written on the back of the bill. "Next time, show up between taking the order, and dropping of this bill." No, they weren't busy, she chatted with five other servers for 20 minutes. Unfortunately for her, the manager walked by, and saw the "tip" before we had left, and talked to us. We ate their often, and she was not very impressed with that waitress. We ended up getting a $40 gift certificate since we had already paid for the meal, and the waitress was being hauled into the office when I left. I don't know if that's why, but that was the first and last time I saw her working there.

I agree that waiters/waitress's should get paid a decent wage to begin with and not have to rely on tips... having said that, I tip my waiter/waitress very handsomely... though I haven't every worked in a restaurant before I can appreciate all the **** they get from ******* customers, if they can put up with that, and still have a smile on their face when they come to my table they deserve a good tip, imo

+1 !

I had a local high school kid cut and bale our hay this summer. He filled up 2 wagons, and then was just letting them drop on the ground. My problem because I didn't have an extra wagon ready because I didn't expect the number of bales we got, to the tune of about 200 extra bales.

So I'm out there driving around, throwing bales on my equipment trailers by hand, I was shocked to see the kid get done bailing, he jumped out of the tractor, RAN OVER and helped me throw bales on the trailers. I was in shock, didn't expect this from a "kid" being that I have lost all faith in most males under the age of 30, as I see most of them as pretty much totally worthless. (BTW, throwing bales in not easy work, especially in the middle of summer in full sun and humidity, stacking them 4 high on a trailer that sits 2' off the ground, actually, its rather *****)

The kid helped me for about 45 minutes, but because of his initiative, I sent him home with a $40 tip. Hope I didn't spoil him !

Never heard of this before. Tip a hardware store employee??? WTF?
Or even a auto parts store employee???

Next time I fix a boiler......think I'll call the owner of the building and ask for a gratuity...sheesh.

I work for my wages, ain't that what its about?
