Yesterday's Tractors has a section where people post when they need something hauled from one location to another, and other people will post when they are driving from one location to another and have space to haul things. Do we have anything like that?

I found a pretty sweet 1950s Delta drill press that I'd like to pick up, but it's about 6 hours away from me.

The Delta Drill press can go in a Datsun. Just unbolt the head/power unit and it will come off the pole. Likewise, the table has two collars that unbolt and hold the mechanism to the pole. That all slides off. From there, you can unbolt the bottom plate and everything except for the pole can go in a car's trunk. If you have a fold-down seat for the long part, you should be good-to-go.

I'm more concerned with the distance than I am with being able to haul it

While that's true, a guy has to consider the value of his time. 6 hours each way is a long pull, and eats an entire day, at best. If you can find someone to haul it to you, the cost will be far less than losing a day of your own time.

I've thought about doing this many times in the past. I like to drive, I like to haul stuff, and it would be even nicer if I could at least cover my fuel costs to help someone else out if I'm driving by the locations anyways.

U-ship is a popular site for this, but you basically need to be a business to even have a chance there. No joe-blow just saying: "Hey, I'll haul that for you for $100 to cover my gas and lunch" on that site.

The hiccup to what the OP (and I) are asking about, is that getting paid to haul things with a vehicle is a gray area with the government. DOT, MC#, CDL's, commercial insurance, etc.

I transported some lumber from Long Island NY to a suburb of Washington DC for 2 members on a Woodworking site. The trip aligned with a family trip to DC so it worked out.

I'd do it again if it was fairly painless and it fit with somewhere I was headed already or thinking of going.

The term "ruckering" sticks in my head but I can't find a reference to the term.

Cheers

I’ll be going from Kansas City to Tulsa and back this week if there’s anything along that route that someone needs moved.
