Have you built a Menards Garage Package

I am considering a Menards Garage package, model number 1903614. I have not purchased much from Menards in the past and am wanting to hear from people that know of or have bought/assembled one of their packages. Were the parts of good quality and how have they lasted over time. I live in a rural area and my nearest Menards store is 2 hours away (nearest Home Depot is 1 hour). The price seems good and I am on a budget, but I don't want to pay for bad quality materials.

I live in Kansas, so the garage will have to go through all of the elements, high winds, -20 deg to 100+ deg F temps, hail and snow/ice. I am going to use it to park 2 cars (one of them a 1967 Camaro RS/SS convertible) and a general workbench area.

I would be hiring help to assemble the garage. I have general handyman experience, but I have not completed a entire garage before and my day job takes up quite a bit of time.

Any comments appreciated

Thanks

Steve

I am fortunate to live in the country and have plenty of space. I plan oon getting a slab poured for the garage to sit on. I do not need a permit.

First building I used menards for all the stuff.

Next building came from Lowes. Better wood from Lowes, heavier trusses from Lowes full 2x4 instead of 2x3 from menards. I got a entire bundle of 2x6s from lowes for the wall and only had 2 that were bad. Not so with menards.

I built a Menard's garage in '99, 28x28. When they slid it off the truck, one truss broke a couple boards, but they gave me more plus the nailers to repair it. I was plenty happy with it for the 9 years I had it. It may be different now, I don't know.

As always, getting a good foundation and good concrete work is going to help long into the future.

I would also recommend speaking to your old-school lumberyard, they also likely have packages that are competitive, but you can "option" it up since they probably sell all the materials. For example, I'd go with a better shingle and zero maintenance siding. Not sure you can do that with a big box "package".

If you have visions of heating/cooling the interior I would also think about using a housewrap, ice & water shield, and 2x6 framing.

You can design any size and type of garage you want with Menards. This includes a variety of siding options and many choices of roofing. You can even choose what quality of roof underlayment you want.

Once you have a design set a materials list is generated and you can have it delivered.

Yes, and the little design kiosk in the stores is awesome for getting small building qoutes

in a matter of minutes you can design a custom building -with almost every option - overhangs or not, doors, windows, siding, roofing, size - at each step they give you a ton of options for quality and type of material - at the end a complete price. If you go to a salesperson, they can even print out a complete bill of materials down to the 2x4.

It is a great way to get material costs for a small building and try out options.

They have an online version that lets you do the same fo pole buildings, but for stick built buildings, you have to use the store kiosk for some reason.

if I was storing a 67 ss/rs conv Camaro in Kansas, I'd do icf construction, or pour 10" concrete walls with steel trusses to protect her.

I put up a 24 X 36 garage that was a kit from Menards last December. I opted for upgraded plywood sheathing, upgraded roofing materials, doors and siding. I also have a partial attic with fold down stairs and six 4 ft X 4 ft casement windows. The company I contracted with to build it said they thought the quality of materials was very good. I purchased the kit during an 11% sale to save some money. Menard's also took back all the unused material. I am happy with the finished garage.:)

A word of caution. I opted for an upgraded, non stock, siding material that required a 25% restock fee. The calculator apparently did not allow for reducing the siding material based upon the size and number of windows and doors. My kit came with 50% more siding material than was needed. Menards refused to budge off the 25% restock charge even though their material estimator program dictated the amount of siding required. I even complained higher up in the organization but that was a waste of time. :(

In case you missed it hidden in the above post. Wait for the 11% off sale at menards.

From everything I have read, cause I planned on going the same route. Nothing could be easier than framing a garage.

Good luck and take lots of pictures.

Built story and a half Menard's garage "kit". Had no problem upgrading features and dropping others. For example, I have never done siding before and hired that + materials out....removed them from the kit prior to ordering. Worked with the window and door counter and the contractor/ordering counter to customize. Also staggered delivery of materials so I had time to frame before the sheathing came and wrap and shingles. Overall a great experience. I waited for an 11% off sale and used the rebate to buy a new dishwasher and upright garage freezer.

I no longer shop at Menards, but in the past I have purchased wood from them and my experience has been that it is hit or miss with their lumber. For example, I have gotten a stack of pretty damn good 2X4's from them, perfectly straight and very few knots. At other times I had to pick thru a whole stack just to find 10 that were even half'-way decent. Like I said, there is little to no consistency in the lumber Menards sells. Sometimes it is really good, other times it is really bad.

Thanks for all of the comments. I am going to drive up to my local Menards store (2 hours, one way) and check them out. I will probably see if the local Home Depot will give me a competing quote from the same parts list for comparison.

Does Home Depot even sell trusses? Menards has their own manufacturing plants for steel roofing, nails, doors, trusses, and other stuff.

I and some family built a 20 X 24 garage from a menards kit, 5 years ago. The down spouts were a different size than the gutter opening. And the outer soffit is tin...and should splurge for vinyl.

Other than that, it worked out well enough, and is still holding up strong.
