Have you ever broken a 3/8 ratchet?

I broke one using it with a jack handle as a cheater to move the serpentine belt tensioner
so I could fit a new belt. It took a lot of abuse before the mechanism failed and it was a cheap Chinese ratchet, I wouldn,t dare use my Snap On for anything like that.

Maybe this is why Chinese stuff has such a bad reputation, people are more wary about abusing expensive tools.

Same here. I sent one in, didn't see anything for a month, called them about it, and the lady on the phone said she'd get one out to me immediately. I asked her for a return address should I receive a 2nd one, and again, she told me not to worry about it.

I received the one from the phone call Tuesday...and guess what the UPS guy brought about two hours ago???

I posted above a thread about random thoughts on Craftsman tools and commented about talking to the lady who rebuilds ratchets. Now that I read this thread, it occurs to me that the majority of ratchets I have seen being repaired are 3/8 drive.

The only ratchet I broke was a 3/8 Craftsman old style which bought in a set. I wasn't doing anything severe with it and assume it was a factory defect. I was highly annoyed when they wouldn't rebuild it and gave me a new style. At least it was early in the run and it has a metal selector lever. It's never given a problem.

uh oh

3 years ago, blue point ratchet with foot cheater bar breaking a 95 civic axel nut loose. (also broke the 3/8 breaker bar). guts exploded.

2 months ago, broke a flx80? (long flex head w/ grip) breaking a 92? bmw 5 series camber bolt loose. still yet to trade that out (snap on comes on my day off now). crazy thing was it was where the handle attaches that broke, not the "guts", super impressed.

2 days ago, broke a 3/8 craftsman flex head. forgot on what but i was pissed, me - cheater bar = less torque than a single cam honda. gear is trashed, one half of it works but the other half slips/jams.

so far thats it.
