Next on the list of "Joys of home ownership"....

I have a roof leak... Somewhere around here:

At the moment, time and budget will only allow me to apply a temporary roofing tar patch. However I'm thinking this might give me an excuse to make some nice changes next summer.

What I would like to do is come up with a way to cover the front door from rain and weather (see bad paint drawing below in red). The problem is I can't really visualize how to restructure the roof if I do that. My thoughts keep resulting in a flat section up top that I know won't drain right or another valley resulting in the same issue.

Any ideas or examples would be great if you folks have any input. I'm also playing with the idea of a front porch as well but don't know if that would be in the cards.

Doing some restructure of the roof to have an overhang is possible, but the concerns would be to have to re-route the gutters and also the idea of having a cantilever without a support to the ground may be an issue that will add expense. I am sure that someone will add who has done this type of work in the recent past will chime in, but it may be at this point that you would want to re-do the front chunk of the roof new from the hip over the 3 window side over. Either way, you may have some stud/truss work to do. Good luck!

Yeah that's a good point about the cantilever, maybe a deck would give the opportunity for some support posts.

Haha yeah it has been a bit quiet around here. The GTI got traded in on a blue Nissan Xterra and now that we traded my wife's black Nissan Xterra on a 2017 Chevy Traverse, I am planing on trading my Nissan in for a crewcab pickup towards the end of the year.

Alright I got this thing done last night and my phone died just after taking this picture so here's what I cam up with:

This thing is 4'x8' and about 3' high, all 4 castors swivel and lock. My plan is to take down the bench section under the furnace and sell the cabinet with the drill press on it. Then this new surface can be rolled against the wall and out of the way.

Holy cow I finally got some QST in this weekend!! When I last checked in, I had mentioned that I was going to move some infrastructure around. Then life and weather got in the way for a month and a half. Well, this weekend we got some amazingly nice weather and I decided to enjoy it. I started with a new project I wanted to tackle and that of course required a new tool! So saturday the family and I skipped on over to Harbor Freight and picked up a combination Belt and Disc sander, as well as some extra sand paper, a sander eraser and some 5 minute epoxy.

The project at hand was adding some cool scales to a Condor knife blank.

After drilling and rough shaping I had this ready for the belt sander:

After a ton of dust and winging it I ended up here:

The handle still needs a bit more sanding with some higher grits and then some kind of finishing coats but not to bad for a first try! I really want to get some flat stock and do some more practicing at some point and maybe try and take another pass at one of these knives.

That was about all the time I had on Saturday so I called it a night. Then Sunday rolled around and so did the 60*F temperatures! I couldn't let it go to waste so I decided to tackle this Disaster:

Now it's time to sell this thing and continue cleaning off the work benches:

Alrighty the tool chest is gone and weather has been pretty good so that means more garage projects! So in my last post I showed a knife that I just recently handled. Well I decided that the handle looked better wet than dry so I picked up so spray on Poly to give that a try. Being that it was still only about 40*F out and I'm not the most patient person, a mini paint oven was improvised:

After a few coats the result did not dissapoint:

Once that was done it was time to try and learn a new skill, Kydex forming. Kydex is a fun thermo plastic that only requires a heat source and a press to be shaped. After another trip I returned with a toaster oven and a foam camping pad. The press is thrown together with so leftover plywood and door hinges but seams to be working out alright:

It's not perfect but should get the job done. Next up is a cool camping stove that a buddy from work gave me:

Hahaha you are not the first person to tell me that! And yes the scales are a pinecone suspended in resin. Picked them up on ebay from all the way in Russia!

Got some more QST in this weekend with the wife and our son too! First up was some maintenance on my truck which included calipers, rotors, pads, inner tierod ends and outer tierod ends on both front corners. I must say I hate living in the rust belt...

Once that was done it was time for a lumber run to get some projects taken care of. My wife wanted to build a small picnic table to leave at her parents place so the grandkids could use it while visiting. She also liked it so much that she wanted one for our house too. So we got to cutting and building and made 2 of these.

After those were built I turned my attention to a project I've wanted for years. I have always loved old military surplus gear. Just the function over form of it and everything having a purpose. I've had plenty of old ammo boxes over the years and always thought a wooden ammo crate would make a really cool coffee table. Well after looking for a wooden ammo crate for a while I decided it would be a pretty simple project to make one. This also allowed me to make it fit the intended location better than anything I could find on the internet. So off I went cutting and building:

Once it was assembled I was happy with the shape and size but it still looked too new. I thought about maybe beating it up or painting it or a combination of the 2 but then I remembered I have a propane torch.... Yeah! I just built a thing let take a torch to it! I think this WFH is getting to me!
This was the proof of concept test on the bottom of the box:

Yup. I liked it so off we go with the torch and that resulted in this:

All in all It was a good weekend. the next day my wife painted the tables while I kept our son from helping. the next projeft on the list is replacing the shackles and hangers on my truck because this is the current state of my driver side shackle. Did I mention I hate rust?!?!

The parts are on order so I will probably clean up the garage and pull the truck in over the week and maybe start cutting the old hangers off in the meantime.

Yeah man the truck is 14 years old and it definitely shows. It also makes it hard to look at the price tags on newer trucks knowing that you'll be lucky if it lives as long as some dogs before rotting away...

Alrighty time for an update (6+ months later)... It's amazing what can happen in a little over half a year even if we are all stuck in quarantine!

Back in June I decided to trade the Nissan in for a newer bigger truck that would be less stressful when pulling the camper. A local dealer had 5 used trucks on the lot all configured the same with similar mileage. One dark grey, one silver and 3 white. by the time i made it over there the dark grey had already been sold so I took the white truck with the lowest miles. Its a 2019 supercrew cab with a 6.5 foot bed, 5.0 liter V8, 10 speed transmission and max trailer tow package. It has a tow capacity of 9000lbs, 36 gallon fuel tank and didnt even notice that the camper was behind it!

My wife and I also welcomed our second child to this world at the end of September so we now have a son and a daughter.

With the addition of another child, the number of toys and rides in the garage has been expanding exponentially! and with winter on its way I wanted to have a place inside to park my new truck and my wife's new (to her) traverse away from the weather. My initial plan was to get a prefabbed metal carport from Menards or Lowes but with things going the way they have this year and a new child in the house, dropping that kind of money just didnt sit right. So I wnet with the much cheaper option, Harbor Freight!

I stopped on in and got a "10'x20' Portable Car Canopy", 6 tarps, 6 Screw in Dog tie outs and half a dozen packages of 24" zipties. After about an hour and a half I had a place to start moving things:

After a couple of distraction projects I finally had a garage back! Also some toddler supervision:

and everything tucked in nice under the "Shed"
