Different model but it is cheaper ...

Actually I think you will find that the one I linked is closer to what the OP has and not the modern deep bottom version that Chads sells. Furthermore I think the OP actually has a 166 which has folding pillars where as the 162 has fixed pillars. IIRC.

If memory serves me right, someone on this forum has several of these. He posted a pic of them all lined up in the garage.. insane collection!

Great job. Just kUrious. When all said and done, how much did you end up spending on the parts for the restore ?

I often wonder about such restores and weigh out the time, one of which I am short of

I got all the indexing boxes, wheels and rubber bumpers for about $180. All in all I am in the hole for about $550

Would someone please post an up close picture and brief description of the pillar folding mechanism? It appears that they rotate about 2 45 degree faces but how do they lock in the upright position? Spring detents? :headscrat:

Zkling, mine doesn't have the folding pillars. I'd be interested to know if those would fit on my cart though!

This weekend I finally got around to painting my Hazet Assistent :pimpflash

I'm not a Volkswagen/Hazet enthusiast, but I was 'in need' of a service cart and really liked the looks and function of this one.
So €70 bought me this (it was assembled though, but I did't snap a picture):

Sanding revealed the original colour underneath. Why would anyone paint this thing 'RAL-ugly gray'?
The colour used by Hazet is the rather exotic RAL effect 660-2 (not your traditional RAL), but since it was hard to come by I used RAL 5012 out of a duplicolor spray can. Close enough for my purposes.

3 spray cans, 3 layers of paint and 2 layers of varnish later, almost done:

Soaked the chains in vinegar for three weeks (yup, totally forgot about them).

Still need to find some yellow and dark blue paint somewhere to fill in the logo and cut out a rubber placemat.

...I won't apologize for the lengthy post/picture overload/topic hijack.
