Am I happy with it? You bet. The marginal price difference between equally expensive 'C' and 'N' carts could mean that one is a bargain (or another one is overpriced) but like I said before - I don't think they quite compete with each other.

Thanks for the write up! I'm almost ready to take the plunge on the C or N, all I have to do is find one new or used for a great price! Just missed getting one from a fellow air cooled enthusiast I met while on vacation!:eyecrazy:

Congrats!

Those things are too cool! I really dig the concept and the styling. I personally couldn't pull the trigger on one at the prices they command, but they are sharp nonetheless.

I'd like to have a pneumatic tired version of something like that for wheeling around the plant.

Thanks, guys. Sorry for the delay - here's some pics of two trollies as promised. They complete each other perfectly in my opinion:

Wow looking great Alx! I think you need a third one though to deal with that stray tray sitting on top of the cart in some of the pics...

They could do with some little faces on the end like the Henry vacuums!

Must say your garage is really nice Alex, tiled floors and curtains, puts mine to shame!

LOL!

Thanks. I could do with another one (tray, not trolley!). The tray sits on top of either of two shelves, like this on the right:

Hahaha! Well, I did a bit of decoration since the last time you saw it ;)

I like the Henry idea. I shall call them Günther and Helmut. LOL!

Again, as expected from Alx, great pictures and toys. Best comparison pics of the two ive seen. Now just think if I were to bring my 190L and 166N over and mix in. ;)

Thanks bud!

Yep, the C is considerably bigger than the little cart. It was good to finally split the tools between the two for easier access. Now looking at getting a few of these cases with foam inserts for tools that didn't fit and filling the bottom tray of the 'C' with them.

I changed some of my organization again this weekend, but took some better pictures. Most are cross posted in the old world thread.

Figures a Hazet fan would have a 968, great taste! I have a 944 Turbo track car.

You're right - the foam is even dearer than the smart case! Might just get a couple of cases for the plastic trays then.

Haha! That's enough.

For now.

LOL!

I bought some cheapo cases and foam and cut them for special tools, but you might not be able to find the right size to fit the Assi.

Don't be a quitter, Alx! ;)

Bart,

Nice setup. The first photo is very inviting! :)

Porsche and Hazet look great together.

I'm a Porshce fan, though never had one myself.

One day

BTW, seen this?

They are great cars. The 968 just had a serious transmission issue yesterday. Very odd to have trouble with those, but it does have 258k miles now. I have a backup, at least.

I've seen some of those before. Nice looking stuff.

Sorry for the late reply. I think I have a tool organisation bug and I'm giving the whole setup a once over

The 'problem' started with acquiring a very nice unused Hazet 3/8" set on eBay, which I bought mainly for its case. The set turned out to be made by Hazet for Snap On (more about it here).

Initially, I was thinking of replacing the shallow metric sockets in the set with their AF counterparts and deep 12-point with 6 ones I already had - the original sockets, extensions and ratchet from the set would go back on eBay. However, after getting my hands on the box, I realised that selling the parts would be a crime so decided to keep it just the way it was. Except the 6-8 mm, all sockets are 12-point - a slight difference to what I have in my toolbox. There's a few more discrepancies, like ratchet I have is a quick release and this one is not, I don't have a sliding T-handle in 3/8" size and the biggest extension in the set is a tad longer than my other one. So, contrary to my original plan I now have even more sockets and bits to store. As usual. LOL!

The case is not small but it fits on the bottom of the tool cart just fine and with moving all the 3/8" components from the top shelf, I then decided to do it the 'Hazet way' and dedicate the whole shelf to 1/2" and 1/4" stuff. On a side note, I did away with 1/2"+1/4" combo before and only started acquiring the 3/8" size for special sockets and 'completeness'. It is getting used but not as much as the other two sizes above so it is now resides on the bottom shelf - still easily accessible.

With 3/8" out of the way, I then tried to fill the space by using the bigger plastic insert I had for the 1/2" but it didn't clear the sliding tray for smaller parts, as Hazet call it. The tray sits on top of either of two shelves providing more storage and slides to give access to the shelf content - a very smart solution but sadly no match to Hazet's own plastic inserts. And no matter what I did the sockets just stood in the way. To make matters worse, I've already ordered another sliding tray for the second shelf as I had plans to use them both.
doh.gif

Here's a picture of that sliding tray in case you don't know what I'm talking about. LOL!

hz162c-5.jpg
162-C-166-C-Mittelkasten.jpg

Anyway, I scratched my head a little and decided to order this:

122837ba.jpg

Now, because it would look mismatched on its own, I had to order this too (for the second shelf):

118601ba.jpg

The tool arrangment is no different to what I wanted to achieve with my plastic inserts so there won't be any loss nor gain of extra space but in theory it should allow for both sliding trays to move freely. The foam is one piece so should fill the space nicely. I've never considered the foam before - it looked great but I wasn't sure about the durability or layout, not to mention the cost. Somehow, Hazet plastic inserts offer much better variety at much lower price and generally fit more tools in than foam - I really hope this changes with growing popularity of the Smart Case concept. I didn't end up with just the foam, I had to order some matching tools for it as I would hate it to look empty! LOL.

PS: Apparently, Smart Case is not their most expensive case option - I've been buying some TORX tools for some time now to fill in the plastic insert I had. To my luck, they did exact same design in case form (much more compact too) but the cost was staggering 73 Euros! That's for the empty box and rubber insert. :scared: That 3/8" eBay set in the same size box was certainly a bargain.

The TORX box looks like below and yes, I had to order it and a few missing items too but I should now have a complete set. Result! :)

Now eagerly awaiting my parcel from Germany. Pics soon!

Ooohh really looking forward to this! :rocker:

If you don't mind me asking, what sort of prices are Hazet asking for the empty foam trays?

Hi mate,

no problem at all  The full size (3/3) foam inserts are typically 50-70 Euro, depending on the design. There are 1/3 and 2/3 sizes too but 3/3 is much better value for money. Personally, I think it looks better than combination of 3 x 1/3 or 1/3 + 2/3.

Have a browse here.

Thanks north, I think I'm going down that slope Felix Baumgartner style. LOL!

The foam has arrived! It is great and all but I fail to see why it is so expensive. Surely, if they made it a bit more affordable, it would be a hell lot more popular too. A few pics taken with a phone (sorry for the quality ):

TBH, I would stuff a bit more in there. Too much of unused space. I know they designed it with usability in mind but still. ;)

Looks great, Alx! I'm too cheap, so I cut my own foam for some stuff.

And you're doing a great job there! The foam is overpriced for what it is and unlike the brochure pictures, the colour doesn't match 'Hazet blau' and there's no Hazet logo anywhere on the foam. I wouldn't make fuss about the little details if it was cheaper but it's not. The foam is quite thick too so my sliding tray idea doesn't work with the top shelf. The cutting is very precise though, which is good. So it's only 3.5 out of 5 on my scale. Price is the main factor.

Whatever CanUK said times 3. I hope there are infinite universes with infinite versions of me because that means that somewhere I have that setup. :rocker:

Enjoy.

I used to think that these wouldn't be useful, UNTIL I saw this thread. Those things are cool. Now I want one (or 2 or 3 LOL). If you had a few of those, there wouldn't be any need for a tool box. NICE!

I agree it's overpriced and inefficient, but man it looks good. You still have a couple other boxes to cram stuff in, so just have that one perfectly organized with your most used tools. Also the foam I have is not cut very cleanly, so it might not make you happy.

Hello,

is the black top shelf of the 160ST Mini Assy plastic? Or black painted sheet metal. Used to be metal as far as I remember...

I´m looking to buy a Mini Assi but like the all-metal-design of the ancient ones.

Alx, looks awesome; another classic example of Teutonic obsessiveness with organisation! So, quality wise; do you think the foam would get torn up in day to day use, in a professional work environment? I love all things Hazet; too bad they are so scarce here in the USA! :(

Alx can answer this, but I know the black on top of the 166N is steel. Hopefully the mini is as well.

It just takes money to make them a little less rare Billy ;)

Thank you. Hopefully they are steel! When I heard the middle trays of the 166C are made of plastic I was somewhat disappointed. Like my old 162 very much. Will probably soldier on for the next 30 years or so :)

Not exactly portable though. That´s why I NEED :) the Mini Assy.

Old thread - does anyone have some mini assistent vs the 166N/C comparison pics? I'm really considering one of these assistents, just need to choose the correct one.

Wow wow wow. Thanks so much. How do you find the mini?

I love the mini. I currently have (2)166C, (3)166N and (4) mini. I use the mini more since it is truly portable even when loaded. The 166C and 166N tend to stay in the garage or get rolled out to the driveway. If I need to help someone I load up one or 2 of the mini's and throw them in the trunk of the car or the bed of the pickup and off I go.
