Hello, I picked up a Hazet Assistent today. I have wanted one for quite a while but they are usually a bit pricey and so I have been waiting to see if I could pick one up at a reasonable price.

I got this on ebay and whilst it was not cheap it was not as expensive as some of them are.

I got it from an old boy who had retired and had used it for 27 years. It has a patina that I like but I do have a couple of questions.

You could say I am after some Hazet Assistent Assistence.

The top tray is bare metal which will rust. What is the finish supposed to be on the top tray? They are black in the pictures I have seen, is it just painted? If so is it satin, gloss etc?

The rubber trims are missing. I have looked on the Hazet website and can't see them. Can anyone provide a close up picture of the rubbers and maybe some dimensions so I can source some rubber extrusions of similar section.

Thanks in advance and I am hopefull I can give this box another 27 years or more of care.

Hi Flange!

Congratulations to your Assistent. It seems to be from the 1970s, because the top plate was in silver color these days. In the 80s they changed it into black.

There are still rubber profiles available from HAZET: http://www.hazet.de/produktkatalog/product_info.php?products_id=896004270 , but I´m not sure if they fit on this one. The spare part filler is black, but should be silver (to be 100% original)...

You may download the 1979 catalog from here: http://www.hazet.de/uploads/media/hazet_katalog_1979.pdf , your Assistent is on page 14.

Best regards,
Philipp

Thanks for the reply Philipp. I must have missed the silver top Assistents.

The guy I got this one from had it for 27 years which would be back to the mid 1980's but he did not say if he got it new so it could have been a few years old when he got it which would put it in the 1970's

I will order some rubber profile for the trays. I will also put some rubber drawer liner on the top tray to stop stuff sliding around.

The next thing I want is a lamp to go on one of the posts. I guess I should look for a lamp from the 1970's to fit with the age of the Assistent.

I had my top tray powder coated , there should be some traces of the old colour on the underside, I think originally there was a rubber mat that fitted in the recess

Thanks guys, it does seem like a good cart.

Bigplum, thanks for the tip, I will have a look under the top tray and I might get it repainted to keep it from rusting. I will leave the rest as it is.

The guy I got it off had originally thought it was not worth much and was going to sell it for, he said, about £10. I think someone advised him otherwise and he put it on ebay. I paid considerably more than £10 but probabally £70 or £80 less than I have seen similar ones go for so I am happy.

Here's an alternative to painting it:
Sell it to the VW guys, mark it up, a lot, and pay towards a new 166C. They're only original once.

These are nice!

Anyone ever see the one Craftsman had back in the mid-70's? I got on for my father one Christmas or Father's day. He sold his house along with most of his tools a few years ago. I would have loved to have it today

The airhead VW/Porsche guys do seem to love these things and no doubt I make a bit of profit if I sold it. Maybe Jack Olsen would want it but I think shipping would be prohibitive? :)

However, joking aside, I am keeping it.

I do want to keep it original but have concerns regarding corrosion on the top tray only. Maybe I will see how it goes for now.

I will definitely be replacing the missing rubber trims.

Mostly the old VW guys. Look up the big Hazet and Assistent threads on thesamba.

Spray or wipe it down with a good corrosion inhibitor. WD40 makes a specialty one.

The rubber is easily available. Not sure if there are any profile differences.
