Hazet Ratchet

I picked up this Hazet 916 ratchet last week and although it’s in very good condition two of the screws need to be replaced. Does anyone know what size of screws? I am thinking they are metric but I am sure they will be next to impossible to find.

M3 x .50 pitch. In the Hillman boxes at an old time hardware store. I used 20mm long which are a little bit too long but you grind them to length.

Thanks. Most of our old time hardware stores have been wiped out by the big box stores so it's going to be a project just to find the screws. It will give me something to do when my wife wants to look at shoes. I did find a couple of sae stainless screws that would work but I would have to tap out the bottom plate.

Wow that looks like a herbrand

You must have missed that discussion on the Ratchets thread back in November 2021. See post #1,580 through #1,598 on page 40. They are identical. Not just the shape of the head, the placement of the four screws, and the domed switch, which has the same up-down action. The innards are also the same. Two pawls that are asymmetrical to each other, with unique contours to receive the pin under that button. Either Hazet ripped Herbrand off, they had some kind of licensing agreement, or the patent was expired or did not apply. But there is no way it is a coincidence.

your 916 is a "Hazet" (little a) version from 1952 to 65 - there was a similar version 1965 to 69 with "HAZET" inscript.

When I first saw a picture of the 916 Hazet on this message board 11 years ago I already had a few Herbrands and wondered how a Herbrand design ended up on a German ratchet. Still no answer. When I saw the Hazet at a flea market a few years ago it was covered with other tools so I thought it was just another Herbrand. But when I picked it up the handle was longer than a Herbrand and I saw it was a Hazet so I bought it. Doing a google search for vintage Hazet ratchets show no other Hazet ratchet using that design which is odd. 2 inches longer than a Herbrand and only in 1/2" drive.

For the op I'll give you $5 for the ratchet so you can buy your wife some nice shoes. I can get the screws.

That's about a buck less than I paid for it. I didn't look too hard but I found some stainless flat head phillips at HD that were close. 6 x 32 x ¾ . 20 ¢ each. I ground the head down a bit to fit and then used a M3 x .5 die and cut threads on the screw. It worked out really well for now.

If this works and you don't need to modify the ratchet, fine...

if you look at Porsche or Volkswagen classic car classifieds e.g. at theSamba.com,
you will find sometimes prices from $50 - 150 for little "a" versions
because HAZET has some nice tool set made in the 50s - 70s for VW, Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, etc. and is very popular and in demand there. The design of this ratchet was already outdated in the 1960s, but is now all the more popular with classic car owners.
