Hazet tool catalog

I have several old tool catalogs; some dating into the 1920's. In my past, I cared ONLY about US cars and tools, etc. So this Hazet catalog which I have owned for about 20 years or more, formerly was uninteresting to me. But since I have joined Garage Journal, I have developed an appreciation for Hazet tools, among other European tools. So I decided to share some photos of this catalog which I stumbled onto on a back shelf today.

Can anyone tell me the age of this catalog? There are no copyright marks or other dates that I can find.

I note in the photo above that it has a zip code, so that places it at least in the 1960's, right? And the picture of the VW made of tools helps to age it also.

Above is a shot of a two-page spread.

Now I should use this catalog to start identifying some of the Hazet wrenches I have lying around, eh?

Several here could probably help you better than me, but I would suggest posting a good picture of the Assistent pictured in there. Their evolution is well documented and you should be able to get in the ballpark. Cool catalog.

That is where Peter Morris who owns The Motoring Shop came from about twenty years ago, He is a Hazet tools distributor amonst others.

Hmmm....When you suggest posting a picture of, "...the Assistant...", I ASSUME that you mean a cartoon-like character in this catalog? If so, here is the only character I found in this catalog:

Yes, the Assistent is the tool cart. That catalog has the single intermediate tray 161 listed, so it's old. Probably the best place to look up the date is the Assistent thread over on thesamba.com. Monte or someone else may know off hand. I think maybe 50s, though.

I don't think so.

As Lump mentioned in the first post, a ZIP code is used in the addresses on the cover.

I note in the photo above that it has a zip code, so that places it at least in the 1960's, right?

I believe this means the catalogue has to date 1963 or later...

Just took a look in my files...

I believe it to be from 1969 based on the photo used on the cover. I have photos of 6 Hazet catalogues - all with different cover shots. But this is 1969:

Now it's possible they used the same photo for multiple years, but the next-earliest I have is 1965 and the photo is different, as is 1970...

As mentioned earlier the postal code system went into effect in July 1963, so that would most likely place this catalog 1963 or later.
Sometime ago I researched the Hazet logo vs. the HAZET logo. I believe the smaller "a" in Hazet was pre-1965 and the capitalized "A" was around 1965 or so and later, up to today. There are also subtle differences in the markings on the tools as well, including "a" underlined and "a" not underlined. I know too confusing.
If someone else has information on this please step up, because these things are never set in stone, especially with printing catalogs, stamping tools, et.

Having totally hijacked this, I believe this catalog is post 1965.

looks like the double open ends still used the Hazet color decal - don't know when they stopped doing that (pre 80?), but the end date of the practice could help bracket this catalog a bit too.

Sometime ago I researched the Hazet logo vs. the HAZET logo. I believe the smaller "a" in Hazet was pre-1965 and the capitalized "A" was around 1965 or so and later, up to today.

Also... Lump's cat. appears to be a sales cat. made specifically for the reseller - alot like how websites are today. The seller would have a product cat. made, using the same stock pics from the manufacturer but the layout will be different... so it may be very difficult to pinpoint the date - same year hazet factory cat. may have a totally different look and layout.

Q: Lump, where is the cat. printed? Does it have a print docket number on it (would be above or below "Printed in")

No, nothing like that. I'm in the advertising business myself, and consequently I buy a lot of printing, and so I'm used to looking for things like that. But there is nothing in this one.
And I'm sure you're right about the reseller-version of this catalog. In my business I sometimes make those for my clients. To accomplish this, we make two versions of the catalog from the beginning. The version which will be used for resellers has no phone numbers or contact info for the mfr, only leaving white space. Then for each of your major resellers you change the black-ink plate on the press, and put the reseller's contact info there. Sometimes you leave the area blank, for smaller resellers. Then you ship them blank catalogs, and they can place their own label over the white space, or even use rubber stamps to ink their contact info on them.

I frankly hadn't paid much attention to that feature of this catalog before... Good observation!

That's cool... me too, in a former life.

Wondering if tracking down some info on the reseller would help bracket the date too - when they went out of business or changed names, etc... sounds like a job for History Detectives!

Yeah, I suppose so. But now that we've narrowed it down to about a 5-year window, that's probably good enough for me. Before, using the zip code as my only clue, I knew it was between the early 60's and the late 70's or early 80's (since that's about when I got it). Now the consensus seems to be that it is between 1965 and 1969.

On a side note, I've started doing some serious sorting and cleaning of all those tools I bought last summer, and I've found a lot of Indestro tools. No 1/2" combo of the correct style...but we'll keep searching for it in my pile. And beginning shortly I'll be hitting tool-selling events again, with a hawk's eye peeled for that wrench for you. I would love to be the guy to find it. Just imagining your satisfaction with filling in that missing hole will be pretty cool for me.
