I have an older (FREE) (1985) 80 gal horz tank and Champion 15B pump.
I am looking into have the 15B pump freshened up/rebuilt, purchasing a 5hp 1750 rpm motor, cleaning up the tank, new switches, etc.

I will probably have around $1000-1200 into it once I am done.

On the flip side I could grab 2 of the HD/Lowes 60gal single stage units for 499. each (or 450 when on sale). They are 11.2 cfm @ 90psi (each), that will cover 98% of my needs. I could flip on the 2nd one when blasting or other high CFM needs.

Any words of wisdom??

The Champion has a higher duty cycle. When you are blasting I would guess that both of the Lowes compressors will be running continuously, and they won't like that for very long (they will both be spitting lots of water out after about 10 minutes of continuous use).

I have a HD 33 gallon vertical tank compressor and it's ok, Assembled in the USA with Chinese components. I would rebuild the Champion and keep using it rather than buying a new one.

If you are spending the same amount of money either way, champion hands down, no debate.

The champion should outlast you in this lifetime.

Running two units has never made sense to me...

I used to have Husky/Lowe's single stage & now I have two 5 HP Champion R15 compressors. There is no comparison. Dual stage cycle 145-175 and single stage typically cycle 90-125. By the time you factor in pressure drop, single stage don't cut the mustard. Use a 50' hose? That 90 psi before the compressor cuts in can be 70 or lower at the tool. With dual stage the problem goes away.

What is wrong with the 1985 R15? Have you tested it? If its not blowing oil it may just need valves which are super easy on the R15.
