HDMI crimp tool

Has anyone crimped together their own HDMI cables? My equipment room is going to house my small server cabinet which has a couple of rackmount workstations I use for work and personal. The idea is to have the computer equipment itself in the sound isolated equipment room and the keyboard, displays, and speakers in the office. I've never put any HDMI cables together, but am assuming it's not terribly difficult with the right tools.

I've seen some crimpers by Luxi and not sure if there are any other products out there. I do find myself needing to make some HDMI cables from time to time.

I didn't know you can make those. are they 4K compatible? what type of cable do you use? please elaborate. custom length cables would be great.

Yeah, I terminate all manner of cables when I have to work on wiring harnesses for aircraft. Agreed, it *****, but I do have a fair bit of experience with it. The issue with my office is that I'm committed to stuffing that smurf tube with pass through cables at this point. If I can't terminate my own HDMI, I'm kind of screwed.

Is it not a "thing" to field terminate your own HDMI cables? The resolution I'm currently supporting is 2560x1440 and was thinking that with the right tooling I'd be able to fish some HDMI bulk cable through and then field terminate.

It's not a thing for the most part. You need ultra precision with HDMI. And it's more of a home standard than a pro one. A lot of pros use some form of SDI. Wouldn't be dealing with HDMI in a pro environment often, which makes field termination even less common.

Having made 100s of RS232 cables (you young un's don't even know what that is) and dozens of Ethernet cables, I have given up !

Not worth the time and effort, especially when quality crimpers can cost $100 !

Well, fortunately, this is no longer an issue. My GC has a friend who has the HDMI crimpers and will run the cables and field terminate them for me at a fraction of the cost of me buying the tooling and materials. The tooling looked like it was going to be around $200, but a 250' spool of HDMI 19-conductor cable is like $300-400 on top of that. So... very much looking forward to farming this one out!

BTW, we still use RS-232 for a lot of things!

NOPE!

Ive NEVER seen HDMI cables field terminated.

Not even in professional commercial AV setups.

I did a commercial A/V job at a university and my employer designed the system with copper and fiber HDMI extenders. No field terminated HDMI anywhere in sight...

Extenders (HDMI to cat6) is the right way to do this and how most pros will do it when you need to run a distance. Max recommended length for 4K on an HDMI cable is 10’.
