So, looking for a new mig welder, been watching the boards, ebay, etc. A couple of days ago a Miller 216 shows up, brand new. Someone bought it as a gift, never used, just needed to get rid of it. "Buy It Now" price of $1,000.

Asked the wife, she was hesitant about it, did I *really* need it, etc. It was late, so I decided to check again in the morning. Of course, it was gone. Now kicking myself. :tantrum2::tantrum2:

So who else has missed a deal lately by waiting? (Just so I don't feel alone) :lol_hitti

Once I was at work and during a lull I was browsing the classifieds on my phone. I found a guy with a wheelchair lift out of a mobility van for free, just come pick it up. 12V power pack, hydraulic cylinder, lots of good parts for a motorcycle lift table or something like that. I decided not to call while at work, and of course when I called later it was long gone. Poor choice.

I do not know what you want for a MIG welder, nor do I know what that one was, but if your looking for a quick 110V, Hobart or something like that, you can do better. You do not miss anything. I can buy the new 110 Hobart for like 800,.00 locally in MA.

I missed a Millrite Mill for $1000 just this week, because I procrastinated instead of rushing over to see it.

I passed on a Millrite Mill a little over a year ago for 600.00. I bought a bridgeport 3 months later for 300.00. You have to be there when the deals are there.

The opposite:

Was looking for a clutch pedal for a 1970 mustang as I was doing a auto to manual swap. At the time finding a 69-70 pedal was like finding gold as they wern't being reproduced and everyone was doing auto to manual swaps. If you could find them, they were going for $200-$250 a piece. Came across an ebay autction for a 69 pedal with a $39.99 BIN price and I snapped it up. Barely looked at the condition, pictures, and shipping cost.

Later I looked more closely at the auction, it had only been listed for 13 minutes before I snapped it up.

Of course, not you can be a repo for $50, but it was a great score at the time.

We all know the moral to this story: Never listen to your wife. Women have the mistaken notion that there always has to be a "need" for a tool purchase.
Everyone knows how wrong this is.

Using advanced search, it is interesting to note that no such completed auction exists for a Miller 216 on Ebay. I wonder if the seller came to their senses and cancelled the auction.

***EDIT*** Are you sure it wasn't a Lincoln PowerMig 216? :)

A great deal, indeed!

It took me about ten years to really understand that there will always be good deals that come along, and that great deals come along fairly often too. Because of this I try to consider the possibility of finding something similar down the road, possibly closer to actually having a use for it.

Some day I would like a mill, but more of a 3/4 size unit. Until I get my Chrysler done (or at least moving under its own power) I don't think it would be wise for me to get one unless I want to lose all marital relations for the rest of my natural life...

Heh, true that!

Christmas Eve 2008 I'm surfing eBay waiting for ... Christmas Day. I find a vehicle in Florida with BIN $11K or make offer.

Me: Can I get it?
Her: Sure, if it will stop you from constantly asking me if you can buy a car!
Me: No way, that's a crazy price for that!
Her: Then offer him less.

I offered $9K just to shut her up.

8 minutes later the guy took the offer!

I still own the car.

With my past girlfriends, when they would ask me if I needed ______ (fill blank with tool, car, toy) I would retaliate with do you really need _______ (fill blank with purse, shoes, clothes, phone, etc)

I got burned bad before... I learned to no longer hesitate if you are in the market for something specific and a good item with a great price comes by.

My wife forgets she buys shoes. She has shoes she has never worn.

Hell, they don't even fit into the closet anymore!

I often let hesitation make my decisions for me. Wait a couple days, and if it's still available, buy it.

That's kind of dumb because the more people want something, the more valuable it is. But whatever; I like time to think.

No real reason to complain for you, I guess.
As most of them are high heels, you should get some fun out of it too.
You just have to look at it from the bright side.

I just couldn't agree more.
Or, as my biz admin tutor always mentioned about a missed chance:
"Keine Sorge nächste Woche wird eine neue Sau durch's Dorf getrieben."
Which translates pretty much into:
"No worries, next week, there will be another pig chased through the village"
resp.:
"There'll be always another chance"

So you might as well get over it, while you have a beer or two.

Patience,as posted above.......Cash.....and a list of exactly what you're looking for.Do the research before hand........somebody has an XYZ pce of equip,in alot of cases you can't be hemmin and hawin about it.And theres a certain amt of "label'ness" involved.IOWs if you're a Clausing,BP,Powermatic(or pick a label) freak,it can pay benny's to stick with it in some respects. An example,we do Walker Turner here.......have enough of their stuff that pretty much know at a glance whats Good/Bad.

I've passed on some BIG Lincoln stuff......but it ain't like they didn't make a bazillion of them,so the deals keep showing up.I'd also say if you have a welding pro-shop in your area that you contact their road salesman. They'll hook you up in alot of cases for around 75 cents on the dollar on very slightly used equip. Its worth contacting them and tell'm what you're looking for.I got a Lincoln 180 mig like that.....it was their best model basically new,for right much less than sLowes had their Homeboy models, and he threw a bottle at us for free.BW

That's not dumb at all. It's a very smart thing to do 99% of the time.
If you hesitate your gut is telling you something - listen to it.
