Hi guys , I need to install head trim over my windows with dams on the ends. My question is do I still run J trim on top of it for metal siding ? If anyone had any pictures that would be great.

Are we talking about R-panel or something else? Why wouldn't you use J-trim (assuming a vertical metal siding like R-panel) to receive the siding?

Where I’m from the building code requires a head trim ( drip cap ) with dams . Not just a J trim

When you say head "trim" I'm assuming you're talking about the flashing and not the actual window trim. The dam at ends complicate installing some sort of J-channel which typically need to drain at ends. If you cut the J channel inside of dams you'll need to leave a gap so the channel drains out front which isn't how it typically is done. Usually the top J channel will have tabs that go down into the J channel on sides. You'll also need to figure out how to cut face of the J channel so it appears to extend past the dam and look proper at connection on side.

If the head flashing incorporates the J for your metal siding, I don't see how it could include a dam if that's what is actually required. It will never drain. Suggest talking to your inspector you may not need the dam along with the J, which will drain out sides.

Horizontal j above a window or door is a trap for water and all kinds of debris. Really a bad design.

It hides a cut edge. That is the only positive.
