Header for small shed windows?

I am building a garden shed 2x4, 16in OC construction. I have (3) 14" wide windows being installed a intervals such that they are more or less co-located with regular stud spacing intervals. Do I need to make traditional headers, with cripple studs, and such when the window is actually within the regular stud spacing, Or can I simply get by with horizontally laying 2x4s on top and bottom of window? Thanks!

Shed and no code? I'd just throw a 2x4 top and bottom of the window and call it a day. There's no load to worry about if you maintain normal stud spacing and just stick something in the stud bay.

All depends on if a building inspector will be stopping by. Those are so small, there would not be much of a load on them, so do what you want, but doubling up the 2x4s around the opening gives you a bigger surface for the nailing flange, sheathing and any exterior trim.

You could probably get away with a single 2x4, however, doubling them makes it stronger and only will add a few bucks (probably less than $5) to the total cost of the shed. Heck, you might have some cut offs that'll fit right in.

Generally, the problem comes in when the spacing of the windows falls somewhere other than the stud cavities. So, I see no problem with that.

I'd just lay down the 2x4s - header is there to transfer top plate loads to the trimmers/king studs to the floor plate. If you are not breaking up regular stud locations, not really needed.

My same thoughts exactly. If not cutting through any studs, then the header and footer for the window are just need to provide something to attach the window, siding and trim to.

I'd like to know who has to deal with an inspector on such a project - wow.
Considering it's a local government thing, it can range from zero inspections to full-blown plans presented to the local authorities with site, framing, and final inspections. All depends on where you live and how big your shed is.

My 10 x 16 shed was built by an Amish outfit in Lancaster PA, and they used a single 2x4 laying flat as a header for each of the three windows I have. They used two 2x4's on end for the door header.
