Will it be carrying any brick load on the outside? Is there any transferred truss load from the roof?...which direction do the joists or trusses run?

All 2x4 framing with 24' trusses on a 24' W x 32'L. I'm not sure what you mean by transferred truss load. Just a simple gabled roof building. Trusses run the 24' width. Garage door planned to be on the 32' wall about 2'6" from the left corner.

He was asking if the header will be picking up the roof load, which it is from your desciption. According to my Microllam book a Microllam LVL beam 3.5"x9.25" will work up to a load of 30PSF Live Load and 15PSF Dead Load. Seeing that your in VA that should work since this is based on a moderate snow load. Although I didn't factor in a brick load if that's what your using.

Use a 1/4" thick steel fletch plate sandwiched between two 2x12” for a header.

In 1975 I built a 26 X 36 attached garage in the UP of Michigan.

My overhead door was special built...18 X 8. I went to the local lumber mill and had them cut 3 REAL 20' long 2X12's...the local boiler company cut two 20X12 sheets of 1/4" steel for me.

I sandwiched the two steel sheets between the 3 REAL 2X12's with 3/8" bolts. The header weighed almost 300 lbs (est). I set it on 12" concrete block pillars and bolted it to the garage sidewalls.

The local inspector flunked my inspection because he said code required me to use one 2X6 header....he wasn't comfortable varying from that spec.

I told him to leave my property and to never come back. If he did, I told him he would get an ***-load of buckshot.

My APPROVED inspection came in the mail a week later.
