Headlamp strap

I use headlamps (LED type without the hardhat) a lot.
But everytime, the first thing to go is the strap.
They barely last a year for me.

When I search Amazon for a replacement strap, it costs like half the price of a new headlamp.

It's like there's no point to buying a replacement strap, but a new headlamp instead.

What gives ?

Is there a strap that you can use like a long time, and not too expensive ?

All of mine have stretched too. Cheap elastic......

Maybe cut the waist band out of a pair of tidy whiteys and use that?

My bet is the sunlight causing them the fail so soon.

The stuff from the fabric store was made to sew into clothing. I have tried it and it does not last long. The stuff used in headbands for lamps, respirators, and goggles is heavier stuff. Buying little precut pieces from the people that make the devices is a rip off, if you can even find them. Try somebody like Strap Works. Black 3/4" elastic is only $.50/ ft. Of course you might have to sew, glue, staple a loop on an end.

My Petzl pixa 3 is quite heavy, still the strap has lasted 4 years as worklight (sits on my head all the time when I am working) and survived several trips to the washing machine. It's on it's last legs though. Sometimes you get what you pay for I guess.

What is the brand of the headlamp in the first post?

I got many cheap ones. Nothing that cost like a $100 Petzl.

Mostly sub $30, Dewalt, Black Diamond, and misc really low price chinese type.

All used until the strap broke or loosened, then the headlamp is useless.

Yes indeed there is differences in headband quality. You have to get a premium headlamp fullstop. Look at some replacement parts. I recommend u step up the budget to $50. https://www.fenix-store.com/fenix-hl50-led-headlamp/

Like many tools go too cheap and it costs much more.

The OP asked for a source for headlamp strap. How does it hp to tell him to throw it away and buy a better one or debating the merits of various headlamps? As far as Singapore goes, it is an advanced, high tech place that undoubtedly offers anything you can buy here.

Milwaukee is releasing headlamps soon. I would imagine they would have replacement parts offered on those.. this might be a stupid question, but what brand lamp are you using? I would think any large company like Coast would have a customer service dept to contact. I seriously hope this post isn't over trying to get a new headband for a $15 headlamp.

I've had my rather large Coast attached to a hardhat for a long time and I haven't had an issue with the band.

But anyway, here's one for $5.99 with free shipping. Took about 30 seconds to find on google.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EZZFXNA/?tag=atomicindus08-20

There's about 5 more options on the bottom of the same page.. I think any reputable brand would have options out there. Coast is pretty good and not too expensive as far as headlamps go. What brand are you looking for? If you're using a cheap peg hook model, it might be a good time to upgrade.

I just stapled mine to my forehead.
I get some strange looks at Church, and no longer can wear my mc helmet.
It's really handy for those 3 am trips to the bathroom.

Good 3/4 " elastic strapping is 50 cents a foot. but if you have to have GENUINE brand X replacement strap, nothing else will do. You could buy a couple headlamps for the cost of a GENUINE replacement. I am not talking about that stuff from the sewing center but the stuff made for goggles, respirators and headlamps. Strapworks is one source, I am sure there are others.

That makes more sense than spending enough to buy three new headlamps on the cost of a GENUINE replacement strap. You can buy good 3/4" goggle/respirator/headlamp elastic strap online for around 50 cents a foot.

Seeing as how the OP is in Singapore, there was guy on the 4th or 5th floor of Sim Lim tower that sold headlamps and parts to make your own head lamps.

If he is long gone, if you can't find a fabric product in Little India, it doesn't exist.

OK good to know. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't the Streamlight brand that had the cheap straps.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I appreciate all the response, as I don't get much elsewhere. GJ is a great forum with great people. :)

I've decided to "step-up" a bit and order this Fenix from Amazon since it will ship to Singapore
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KVR27QM/?tag=atomicindus08-20
and also order some Foxfury and other cheap straps.

And also elastic bands from aliexpress, seeing that most anything is made in China nowadays.

In a couple of years, I guess I'll settle down somewhere for a relatively cheap and lasting strap.

Unfortunately, buying stuffs in Sg is not cheap. Either pay a lot and/or get poor quality stuffs.
