I was in HD the other day and grabbed a box of FastenMaster HeadLok construction screws. I normally use SPAX, but figured I’d try something different.

The head on these is like nothing else I have seen.

Are these common in some industry, or just a proprietary design by this company?

Since I will someday have to remove these screws, I did future me a favor and returned these for some SPAX.

As far as I know, that drive design (used on their wafer head screws) is proprietary to FastenMaster. But I have been using those screws for years, so I have those bits everywhere.

FWIW - That driver / screw combo does NOT strip out - PERIOD.

I used them when I built a bed frame out of 2x12's and 2x6's. All well and good, but I normally use screws with torx heads like Spax and I only had that ONE bit around. I'm moving right now and I went to take the bed frame apart the other day...guess what I couldn't find for a while...

I guess if you had a lot of bits for it that you'd always have one, no problem. But you can always pick up a torx at any hardware store if you suddenly didn't have one on hand when needed.

Yet another damn screw head design?

KILL IT WITH FIRE!

Nope. No. Hell no.

I am kind of with you here. All we need is one more dang style. But, if these don't slip, let's keep them and ditch torx. I am right now doing a bunch of screw work and I was reminded yesterday that torx hold much better than good ole #2 phillips but they are far from perfect.

The HeadLoks are designed for heavy use, replacing lag bolts in many situations, out-performing screw specs in other situations. They're not made in smaller screw sizes, like #8x1-1/2". I've been using them for years. Screw heavy cabinets to a wall, attaching newel posts to framing, doubling or tripling up LVL's.

They're superior to any lag bolt I've ever used. The structural screw is a much smaller diameter yet with better holding capacity and it drives like butter. Nothing better for hanging shelves, TV mounts, etc. I just used some this weekend for a 1x4 header board to mount a barn door track on.

I've been using them, and like them. Since they give a bit in every box, I've not been concerned about it.

I don't doubt they are good. I just don't see them as being a big improvement on similar offerings from SPAX or GRK that use an industry standard head.

My issue isn't about hanging the shelves, it is about 5-10 years from now when you are moving and have to take them down.

I haven't touched a standard lag screw since I discovered these about 8 years ago.
