I work as a field operator... so my gear hard hat with ear muffs attached and I chase the radio all day long.. The problem I'm having... driving headache by the end of the day, begging for quiet time. I think the supplied ear muffs are not cutting it.. I've tried using ear plugs along with the muffs... works great...but I can't hear my radio when control is calling... :shocking:

Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations, of what I should buy?? I'm looking for hearing protection I can plug into my radio...so I can hear the control room calling??

Are you sure the headache isn't from the hard hat not fitting properly, saftery glasses too tight behind the ears or ear muffs too tight ?

I've blared a Strat since Nixon was lying to us.
Go see a good eye doctor. That's where I'd check first.
Make sure the BP is ok too. Sounds like the job *****(most do---so I'm told)

our work supplies custom molded ear plugs that have the option to hook into our site radios. They even have a "vent" that allows normal conversation through, but blocks louder noises. I think they were close to $300cdn a pair, but well worth it imo. I hate wearing the ear muffs on my hard hat.

If your radio uses a standard headphone jack I would recommend Plugfones. They are earplugs with built in speakers. I use them with my motorcycle helmet and have been very happy with them.

I used to wear ear protection 6~8 hours per day.

One thing that happens is the wax ,dirt and sweat plug your ears up over time.
The first time it happened to me it was fast, Like in a weeks time.
For anyone that wears ear protection on a regular basis, Have the doctor pressure wash out your ears.
I make a point to get mine blasted out at my yearly clinic visits.

I worked in the body shop of Gen Motors where there robotic welding going on, body transfers, sirens going off, ......just ndlss noise. And we wore ear plugs and had sets. After a while ears were so uncomfortable...headaches. My wife and sister in law bought me a pair of Boise Noise Supression headset. The block all the ambient noise, but you can hear the person next to you talking without yelling. Absolutely amazing. Not inexpensive, but worth every dime. Loved them.

I wear off-the-shelf in-ear headphones for flying and often at work. Nothing special, they happen to be Klipsch. Nice and quiet and I keep the volume way down. You've got to fiddle around a bit to get them to fit right to block noise. Mine came with 3 or 4 sizes/shapes of rubber tips.
But for everyday loud noise, I'd 100% invest in custom ear pieces.

shooting protection, mine are from ESP and they are super expensive at $2k but they are freaking awesome (even more so since I didn't pay for them, work did).

They are custom fitted ear plugs which amplify normal sounds and shut off all sounds above 90db's or 80db's depending on the model. I can wear mine all day with no issues, super comfortable.

The general aviation recommendation is spot on.
Prop driven small planes are very noisy and radio communication is vital.
Find a small airport radio shop near you.
