I don't have exact specs which I can get , he is a HVAC guy

It would be a high efficiency with a A/C cooling tower unit out side , he is going to use spiral duct work in the shop area

Until you know what exactly he's planning on putting in, you'll have no idea, if it's fair or not.

You could end up with something that's worth more then $3800, but it might not be what you need, so it's a bad deal... What I mean is you get a piece of equipment that's worth $5K, but it's to small or to big...

You need to find out exactly what you'd be trading for.

In not a HVAC man, but we still don't know very much about what he is going to install.

The model numbers you show look like an absolute bottom of the line builder's model 2.5 ton air conditioner condenser with a low end 3 ton air handler. I'm guessing that these have a market value of $1200 to $1500.

You mention 70,000 BTU. Is he going to install electric resistance heat in the air handler as well? (You don't use a separate air handler if you have a furnace---the blower is built into the furnace.)

How much ductwork is he going to install?

The lowest air conditioner SEER allowed by the government since 1/1/15 is 13---and that is allowed only in northern states. (The rest of the country must have 14 SEER). This certainly doesn't sound like a high efficiency set-up.

With all that said, most HVAC folks aren't cheap.

I am no expert either but seems like a decent deal to me.

Only thing I might ask for is see if you can kick in some extra coin for a higher seer unit.

I need heat and ac and I would be happy to trade 3800 in my trade to have it done.

On the defense for Goodman, a lot of issues with systems has to do with the install. Being Goodman is a low cost product and can be purchased by anyone, they get installed by all sorts of residential hacks. That being said, I use Carrier products.
