Looking for recommendations on shop heat detector.

Things I would LIKE:

Alert me to fire when I'm not home (dogs), or when I'm not in shop/asleep.

Maybe a detector that connects to my phone to send alerts, OR one that connects wirelessly to another detector inside the house to also sound off when in alarm.

I do not want to connect to my current home alarm system, would like a stand alone system.

Clarify. You want a "push notification" when the shop heat increases (above ambient) or you want a push notification when something biological is detected in the shop... IE, people, dog, car, goat, furry, whatever...

Two different paths:
1) simple temp sensor programmed for a delta.
2) AI trigger that can recognize humans, dogs, furries, etc WAY before they increase the "heat" in your building.

If you wanna know if it's "dropping like it's hot" that's going to require some advanced technology resources..

Good question! I have a hard-wired heat alarm in my garage, but it does no good unless someone is home.
A search for "wifi heat alarm" comes up with several options. I may look into one too.

@dcg9381 Sorry, I should've clarified. My initial research showed that I do not want a smoke detector, I want to heat detector. My goal is to be alerted when there's a fire in my shop, I figured dust would set off regular smoke detectors so I'm going heat detector.

I brought up my dogs because I want to be alerted when there is a fire so that I can alert Fire Dept or a neighbor to save my dogs if I'm not home, I'm pretty sure it's going to be too late for my shop.

I want to be alerted when I'm asleep if there's a fire because at that point I could still save my shop. I usually keep my phone on silent during the night so I understand that a push notification may not push through unless there's a way to overwrite silent mode like you can with regular phone alarm clock. I wouldn't mind using a backup phone solely for this purpose.

@engineer2 I will look into the Wifi alarms, thank you. I was hoping someone here was already using something that has worked well for them and they would recommend.

So why would you not want fire detection tied in to your existing alarm system that does all of these things you just listed?

BTW, you can set parameters for the "sleep mode" to allow certain notifications and phone calls.

I have Govee temp sensors in my freezers, one in my attic, and one in my bedroom. I get alerts if my freezers go over a certain temp. Probably the cheapest option if you have wifi.

Just something to account for, but a simple temperature sensor may not do what you want unless you're calculating a delta like @dcg9381 mentioned above. The reason for this is that there are plenty of non-fire reasons that a sensor may give off a high temperature reading. The sensor could be going bad, for example. It's also not sufficient to just set some high threshold that's above what you'd expect during a heatwave. By the time you hit 120 degrees, for example, the fire might have grown quite a bit. You want what's know in the security system world as a rate-of-rise sensor. These sensors generally combine a high temp threshold with a setting that alerts if the temperature goes up by more than x degrees per minute. This means that even during winter, if a fire starts and the temperature in the shop goes from 40 degrees to 55 degrees in the span of a minute, you'll get an alarm.

If you’re using “sleep” on an iPhone, you can allow specified contacts to notify through while blocking all others.

I've got some govee temp/humidity monitors for our well house. I can set it to alert me when it senses temps that exceed anything over 140 degs.

I bought a Simply Safe system and have been very happy. It has lots of sensors that can be added. I pay for the alarm system each month as well and it has given me a bit of comfort as I live one mile away. For the money you can't beat a whole system like that vs paying $50 or so for one smoke detector.

Good point, I live in Central Valley, CA. we often reach temps of 110 F, who knows how hot my shop gets.

@ptt49er I think I'm going to do something along the lines of temp sensor + smoke detector + a smart camera that will send me an alert if it hears a smoke detector sounding, that way I can live view and verify the alarm.

Low end, look at Wyze. I prefer Unifi, which is an eco-system like apple.
Both will do "human" detection along with "alarm detection" (they listen for an independent smoke or C02 alarm). They can push notifications on a schedule without triggering a formal alarm.

Thank you for those recommendations! I have had Wyze in the past and was satisfied, so I think I'll go with them. I also found this system called "X-Sense", it has a wireless "base" and multiple wireless sensors you can connect to it (heat, smoke, carbon, etc) and they will BOTH sound off when triggered AND push notifications. I might just overkill the whole thing and sleep like a baby.

The nice thing about the MySpool sensors is that they don’t use an app. There’s a web page (hosted/cloud) to configure the device. Notifications are via SMS and/or email.

Furry detection is easy. Just have a Wyze camera looking at the driveway and keep an eye out for Jeep Wranglers.
