Looking at a used Reznor UDAP200 heater for my garage. Guy says there is a crack in the heat exchange and says it can be welded. I was always under the impression that they cannot be welded.

A new heat exchanger is $1600. A new heater is $1200.

Guy is un sure if the heat exchanger is aluminum or stainless.

Even if it can be welded .. have never heard of it being done. I'm sure if it was a possibility manufacturers would not require replacement.

HE fail at the end of life --- like fixing a leaking water heater. another spot is going to go

Is saving a few bucks worth dying for? Seriously. Carbon monoxide poisoning is no joke. You can't see it. You can't smell it. You get sleepy, doze off, and never wake up. :( The heater that guy is selling is worth 10 cents per pound, at the local scrapyard.

They don't offer an aluminum heat exchanger. It is aluminized, which means it is aluminum coated steel. There are also two stainless options.

Whoever is selling a used heater with a cracked heat exchanger as a repairable item should be taken out back and taught a swift lesson.

Gotta love internet forums.

Do I have to ask? No. I dont. Im not an expert and was asking if it could be done. As I stated in my original post; I was always under the impression that it could not be done.

Should I apologize for not knowing something?

Yes, carbon monoxide is no joke. Again, this is the whole point of asking the question.

I did a google search before hand and found a site that talked about repairing them. And another that said absolutely not.

I was always under the impression that they cannot be repaired.

The cost of modine type heaters has come down and because of that, in my opinion it doesn't pay to buy a used one. If you buy a new one it will come with a warranty and the odds are it will last a very long time.

Any of the 70's era hanging heaters I've had inspected failed due to cracks in the heat exchangers. These seem to have a useful life. And any that old that I've looked at have been past that useful life.

I've dealt with a lot of heat exchanger repairs over the years, and none of them have been successful. JB Weld seems to be the favorite of jacklegs everywhere for screwing up this type of repair.

I have a 40x60 building with a 14 foot ceiling and only a moderate amount of insulation. It heats well with a 100K BTU power vented Reznor hanging natural gas heater. The heater cost about $700 new last year. Maybe you need to drive down to NY and pick one up.
