Will heat damage galvanised steel, I am trying to straighten 3'' by 3" angle g. steel? Steel is pretty strong to do cold. This is for restoration.
Got some good advice on vineager to clean metal on this site.
Thanks:headscrat

It will cook off the zinc. If you see a white filmy looking smoke or soot you have cooked the zinc. Do not breathe any zinc smoke as it can make you sick with flu like symptoms. Ask me how I know....:( I wear an approved mask when working galvanized metal grinding, welding and cleaning up after as grinding dust can make you sick as well.

For sure a mask and good fan. Those fumes can kill.
And you will have to re-galvanize it when you are done.

:rolleyes2 Here we go with the zinc monster again.
Yes it gets a little stale to those in the know but there are plenty of guys than don't know about it yet. If it keeps some guys from getting exposed during weekend tinkering or on the job then it might be worth the electrons spent.
Not a monster but is a often encountered and unknown issue when working on cars and other galvanized stuff as handymen often do.

I got myself sick as a dog for the better part of 3 days doing "its just a quick fix, I can skip the mask and other protection" job in the shop. The job endded up being more than first though and I got wrapped up in it and never used my mask. I figured out what happened late in day one and spent the next two days kicking myself in the *** for "saving " 20 seconds and not using the ******** mask. Killed a nice weekend and likely some of the brain cells that I did not kill in the 1970s. :headscrat

Thanks to all, that posted warning. I went to "jim wilson's site" and it really got to me. I'm also a Nam vet and am accutely aware of chemicals "Agent Orange", had no idea about zinc.
I might be old, but I'm a FNG at this site.
I glad I ask the question.
