Anyone have a heat pump system installed in their garage ? Looking for some pictures/ideas of where the air handle is placed .Im thinking of putting one in my garage .Its 30'x35' . I have a waste oil system now but I would like some cold in the summer .I figure a heat pump will kill two birds with one stone .

I have a heat pump/ac in my garage. 1500 sq feet. 18 foot ceiling-metal-insulated.
One door-10x14 one side door -no windows. Air handler sets on the floor -air is force out the top
with some simple "T" metal duct. Best money i have every spend. Location is very
close to your location. The unit is a Trane.

Similar to the concession stand at the track. It's just a vertical flow air handler set on a raised box with the filter tray under the unit and a big elbow on top blowing into the room. Nothing to it. We happen to have "residential" type units in our data center, same deal backwards - filter on top, blows into a plenum built from sticks and insulation board with vents - unit sits on the plenum.

K - today temp at 99--inside 80. 3 ton unit. filter is on the bottom. nc location. will cool lower but set at 80. Winter set at 70. Works great.
Couple fans to move the air around.

I have my unit positioned so it blows across the north side (cold wall), that's where my doors are located. 28 x 40 and I am using a 18,000 BTU. Heated for half the cost of my in floor.

One problem with heat pumps is that in heat mode it uses the backup heat any time you move the thermostat over 2 degrees at a time. If you have set at 50 and then bump it to 65 to work in there the first 13 degrees are going to be expensive to heat with normally three times the cost of the heat pump heat.

That's the good part about mini splits don't have electric backup. They are not considered a primary heat source. Mine works fine down to -20 degrees C. Unless you live in an area where the temperatures are very cold for long periods of time the mini split is the way to go. Can be installed in 4 to 6 hours.

True.

That's why I put a toggle switch to the aux heat wire (white) in my thermostat and turn it off.
It made the heat pump run a little longer too and works real well as long as it's not below 35F outside.
When it's below 35F, I turn the aux heat ON and turn off the outside unit.

respond to Milton post:
I had my heat pump installer disconnect the heat strip function. Works fine for 3 years now. NC location, sometimes 30's low, typically 40's low in the winter, with daytime highs in the 50's or 60's.
nice even heat and cool all year round with the heat pump setup. my shop is 3000 sq. with a 3T unit. stick built, total spray foam insulation.

I also do not have my heat strips active, as right now I only have a 60 amp service. Seems to work ok, and I help the shop get up to temp with a wall mount gas heater when needed.
