Heat Pump Problem

Not sure why I didn't post this here first.


On my heat pump, the outside unit will shut off but the inside blower will not. Also, the air coming from the vents is warm. My breaker box has two double pole breakers, one marked air conditioner and one marked heat. The inside blower would not turn off until I turned off the one marked heat.

Bad contactor on the thermostat? or Bad fan relay? Or something else?

The breaker marked "heat" should be for the indoor air handler. The double pole breaker is for the outdoor unit. Most likely the outdoor unit has a problem. If the fan runs then the thermostat should be calling the outdoor unit on. If you can use a volt meter check it out, otherwise call a pro.

Thermostat is getting power.

Now the weird thing it started last night. When set to cool, the heat comes on. When set to heat, it cools.

Check the board. I just had the same problem and found it was the board had gone bad. Look for places on the boaed that are burnt or really brown. They are not cheap though. Just my 2 little pennies

There's been alot of circuit board problems of late from several manufacturers. I tend to blame it on import parts, but I'm prejudiced.

Many boards are coated with a clear coating to seal against moisture and dirt. Come to find out the coatings are too thin, not uniform, or not sealing up to specs. Humidity goes up, and boards short out/work intermittently. If you can physically see the board, look for any hot spots, discoloration, or odor. Usually - but not always - such defects are visible.

Well I had a HVAC tech come out today. Verdict: Relay on heat strips is bad, heat strips are burned up, condenser pump is bad, and the motor on the outside fan was running in reverse, freon was almost gone.

He said the bill to fix everything would be between $500 and $600 then gave me some options to spend less. He said he could simply disconnect the heat strips and not replace relay and save $90. If he did not replace the pump that would save $200. The water will drip into a sand pit so no problem there.

Ended up costing me $175. Unit is eleven years old so we will probably replace it in the fall.

On the motor running in reverse, he said ours was the third this week that started doing that. he reversed the wires to the circuit board and it is running "correctly" now.
