Heat Pump Thermostat Wiring

I am working on a rental house that had some fire damage. It has a 2011 Payne heat pump with all components housed in a metal outdoor box. The original thermostat was damaged in the fire and lost in the demo work. I have purchased a new Honeywell non-programable RTH3100C thermostat that is made for heat pumps. I know where most of the wires go but there are 2 wires in the junction box I am unsure of. I believe both wires (one white and one violet) are for the electric heating elements. I traced these wires and they both plug into the circuit board terminals marked W2. The new thermostat has terminals marked E and AUX to energize the heating elements when needed. There is only one heating element and relay.

My question is can I connect both the violet and white wires together in the junction box (as they are both W2) and run them to both the E and the AUX terminals in the new thermostat? I unplugged the wires in the second photo to show the terminal labeling.

"E" is Emergency Heat. "Aux" is the regular electric heat. It looks like the two "W2" and "W3" connections are not control circuits. Without diagrams for both units, I really can't say.

I wired the violet and white wires together and ran them to the AUX terminal on the thermostat with a jumper to the "E" terminal. The electric heat strips and the fan came on when the switch on the thermostat was placed in emergency heat mode.

In normal heat mode the heat pump turned on and the heat strips kicked in when the thermostat was set at 2° above ambient room temperature. Everything is working as it should so I buttoned it up and called it good.
