our 24 year old Janitral heat Pump is just about kaput. I has been a good system with very few problems, but it is now showing its age. We decided to get an estimate from the Air Ease dealer for a new unit with a matching air handler. It turns out that the AirEase air handler does not fit in the space that is available. So he gave us an estimate on a Trane system that is only 14 seer and is not energy star rated. To qualify for the rebate from the electric company it needs to be at least 15 seer and energy star rated. We are waiting for the Costco, Carrier, Goodman/Amana dealers for estimates in the next few weeks. The Airease dealer quoted on a 39.5 inch air handler. Any Ideas on what might fit in the space available? Btw the price we received was 5400 dollars.

What size(tonnage) and how much space do you have? Is it an upright install in a closet or a horizontal install in an attic?

2 ton system installed upright in a closet that houses a 30 gallon lowboy water heater. The opening is about 30 inches.

The Goodman/Amana dealer called and said it would be 7800 Dollars for a new unit. Did even bother to show up. He has been struck off the list.

I'm not a heating guy, but even at a 15 SEER that sounds as if it's not th latest and greatest. I thought SEER ratings today were much higher.

Unfortunately the space for the air handler is small and also houses a lowboy water heater. The budget will not allow a relocation of the air handler. So we have to make do with what we have. The electric utility only requires a 15 seer and energy Star rated to receive a rebate. I was told that Carrier might make a small enough air handler that meets the electric company requirements we have the Lennox dealer tomorrow and the Bryant dealer on Friday.

Lennox dealers gave us a price in a 14 seer and a 16 seer unit 5900 and 6300 after Costco rebate. Also 6100 for a Rheem system

It's going to be tough to find a newer higher SEER unit to fit in that small closet. Can you relocate the low boy wh?

Sure - if you want to pay for it. There was no payback for us to go higher with SEER. More like bench racing HVAC units than practical.

I am kinda leaning toward a 14 seer unit. Just because of the payback for the higher efficiency. The Lennox dealer did say there was more room to work with than what the Airease dealer said. The Lennox has the standard 10 year warranty with a two year parts and labor. As I said before we have the Bryant and Carrier dealer estimates next. I might call and get another Armstrong dealer to come and take a look. I looked up Armstrong air handler specs and it seems like the have an energy Star rated air handler that will fit. I might call a Goodman dealer too.

What are your goals for a new system? Are you simply price shopping? Looking for the lowest operating cost? Improved comfort? Better humidity control?

I work for a Lennox dealer and we can offer systems with different features that are the same SEER rating.

If the Lennox dealer you talked to is through Costco see if there is another one in the area and get a quote from them, we are often bidding against a costco dealer that drives from at least an hour away, we can almost always beat them and we can provide better service.

I was thinking about calling another Lennox. We just need a new system. It gets hot and sticky here in the summer and I just want to get something that is reliable and cost effective. I like to shop around. I am curious to see what the prices through other dealers offer. That is the reason why I am getting an estimate from the Bryant and Carrier dealer. i believe Lennox dealer quoted an 14HPX condensing unit and I am not sure on the air handler at the moment.

The Bryant dealer just left and said he could not help. I called the Goodman dealer down the road and he did not want to deal with it. So I am going to see if I can find another one to call.

Carrier Dealer said there was no problem with installing a Carrier system. He said it will be about $6,400 to $6,800 Dollars depending on what outside unit is installed. He said they do not install builders grade units. He wants to sit the air handler back further into the space and put it up on a 4 inch pedestal. Cut a hole in the hallway to supply return air. The more estimates I fret the more confused I get.

And the Bryant dealer could not help? How much heating to you need? Can I assume all you have is the HP? No furnace ?

Carrier sells the builder grade stuff through another line ...

As you go up in the line (everybody) -- it's efficiency and comfort. The VS blowers and better controls are for more comfort. As you push through the 16's -- they move to two speed compressors. This will make for more comfort.

when it's hot and sticky out -- having a two speed that can run on low for a long time makes for a comfortable house.

First there is only so much money to spend on a new unit. Heat Pump only there is no natural gas in this part of the neighborhood. So heat pump is the only option. I think I am going to get a price on an Arcoaire. A lot of people in my old neighborhood have used a certain person and he is an Arcoaire Dealer. I understand that Arcoaire is owned by ICP which is owned by the same parent company as Carrier.

I used Arcoair on a couple of my rentals -- 2t units. Nice .. got good service from them. We had local guys from the electric company who moonlighted --- that's what they used. They were well priced basic units with larger condenser cases for efficiency and noise reduction.

Not really. Was generally knowledgable of costs ... The ICP fit what I was looking for at the time. Also used basic Carrier on others in another state at this same time. Believe they were able to buy the ICP through the local distributer -- they were basically independents .. so not able to buy and install many brands.

Although, they were the installers and repair people for the utility -- so they knew what they were doing. Believe my utility used York .. so they cool get them as well.

The Aircoaire Dealer Just left and he quoted 5,200 Dollars to replace the heat pump. I know that this is made by ICP the same company that makes Carrier. How reliable is Arcoaire?

Looking at Carrier and Arcoaire web sites. The mid priced line (they call mid tier) (performance) looks to be the same as the Carrier/Bryant. Same case. The higher priced Duracomfort line has a different case and they don't seem to offer the full VS Greenspeed in the Aircoair line.

The Carrier case is different form the Bryant case in the better line -- I'm sure they are identical inside including the Arcoaire. Around me all the oil dealers sold Bryant as Carrier used to market the oil stuff under the Bryant name. It was identical except the Bryant was beige and the Carrier was gray. I did a couple Bryant system after I stopped using oil because my dearer was great before he sold to a big outfit -- they sold gas equipment as well.

It all marketing -- they can't sell the same thing (looking) through every dealer.

It looks like they changed the warranty to offer whole component coverage -- so they don;t give you just the compressor -- they give you the whole condenser. 10 year on better stuff ... 5 on mid-tier.

Goodman dealer just left. 3800 dollars installed. New pad disconnects box and so forth.

The higher end Goodman products and on into the Amana line looks like decent equipment .. with the warranty they offer spending a few more bucks for humidity control and quiet operation may be in order.

Would make sure you check out well if only a Goodman installer -- one of my local Carrier dealers installs Amana .. so its mostly equipment cost for the price difference.

The Contractor said there is not much difference between Goodman and Amana parts wise.

They make the inverter technology available in the Amana line -- it's not in the Goodman line. I was told the case and fan are different throughout the Amana line to differentiate from the Goodman -- make it quieter. not sure about controls

They have to do something ... If going that route I wound review the model number carefully to make sure it's not a builder grade unit.

The 18 looks to be the sweet spot in the goodman line -- priced like a single .. but has the two speed technology and comfort benefits
