My thermostat called for heat and the furnace did this. I lowered the thermostat for a few seconds and turned it back up. It kicked on no problem.

I kept if off while we were not home and only turned it on when we were there. It did it again the next day.

HVAC guy can't come for a week and half. We have two furnaces so we wont freeze.

Any ideas what it is? Can I fix it?

Inducer motor. Any "service" company that told me they couldn't get there for a week and a half would not be on my "go to" list very long. Call someone else.

Since practically no one op checks their unit before they need it, everyone has problems at the same time when the weather changes. A week isnt unreasonable this time of year when all of a sudden everyone needs heat and flips the switch to bad results.

Could be a bad main gas valve. Take that outer panel off, tape in the panel safety switch, turn it back on, and zero in on where the noise is coming from.

You'll have a gas manifold trying to blow fire into the unit from the main gas valve, a small blower motor for the exhaust flue, and your main blower motor back inside in the air stream. A bunch of wires, a circuit board that might have a flashing led, and a bunch of other non-moving components.

I made the mistake of telling the service company that I have two furnaces so I wasn't desperate.

I will check the inducer and the main gas valve. Intermittent problems are fun to trouble shoot.

If it's the MGV it will be trying to turn on at the solenoid. Hook up a voltmeter and see if it is a steady 24v (or 120v) ac.

You're talking to someone with over 30 years of HVAC service experience. Heating season is always slower than cooling season, even at the change of the season.
Any company around here that would not have enough foresight to have enough manpower during the busiest times of the year would be out of business in a relatively short period...

Are you out of the industry now? There's a nationwide shortage of HVAC people given the economy boom and everyone is busy. Unless you **** at life and your trade, then you can get to the job "right away"

I try to get to service calls within a day or 2,but anybody calling me about installs is looking at 2 week minimum.
Personally I'd much rather just do service calls.

The true and reality is tough at times............passing the drug test, not have several DUIs/ alcohol issues and actually showing up for work is part of the life thing he is talking about.

it sure didn't sound like it, it sounded more like he was directing that post directly at Tommy personally, if that was not his intent than I apologize.

As far as your comments, being in the building trades for over 50 years and over 30 years in supervision believe me I've seen it all.

I've been in Public School Facilities Management for the last 17 years and I'm trying to stay in that line, but I actually have a verbal offer from a large HVAC contractor and for leave coverage at a small school district. I'm also interviewing with another school district. The latter would be my choice of the three.

Just some closure.

There is a vacuum line going from the inducer to what I assume is a sensor that senses the inducer is running.

It was cracking so it was cycling on and off. removed cracked portion of line. Problem solved.

Just read your thread and I had that exact problem a few years back. That vacuum hose vibrated away from home and no workie. That became a bit of a problem as this place is 200 miles away. Got lucky as nothing froze, except me trying to figure out the problem.

Did they check the inducer motor while they were in there?
Something in there has a serious death rattle.:wtf:
