I’m researching heaters for my 24x24 detatched garage with 8’ ceilings. Prefer propane, plan to keep it 40-50 throughout the winter and turn it up when I’m out there. Looking at the 50k btu me heater from menards but they say you need 8’ to the bottom of the heater and my ceilings are just shy of 8’. Any input and advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would disregard that 8’ deal. Pay attention to the other clearances more than below.

I love my Modine Hot Dawgg, 45000 btu As I am never cold in my 24 square with 10’ ceilings. I am natural gas though as I rather have fuel 24/7.

This is what my FIL had in his garage similar size (approx 30x20x8). Works great as long as you keep doors closed. This is natural gas but I'm sure something similar is available in propane. Note it is vented to outside.

i live in town and have ng at the house but the wife wont let me drill another hole in the foundation and i dont feel like running another line out there. putting a pair of 100# tanks behind the garage and just running the line through and up the wall sounds easier. now whether to run the vent out through the wall on the side i always see or go up through the asbestos shingles... on the fuel choice the mr heater comes set up for ng but has the conversion parts for propane. so if i save the parts and want to switch it back later that is always an option.

I like the Modine Hotdawg HD 45. It will do a fine job. A garage your size not a lot of propane usage. I have the heat on in my shop right now with that unit.

I just finished installing the NG 50k Big Maxx from Northern tool. It comes with the orifices for propane conversion.

My garage is 25x25. Height is gable with like 7' to 12' at the ridge.

Only 2 walls are insulated currently, but still the heater warms up pretty well the space. I only turn it on when I'm in there, and run it about 55F. Lows here are typically upper 20s to low 30s during the colder months.

Rinnai EX22 will walk away with the space...if it is insulated. If not the EX38. 2.5” hole for the direct vent kit which comes in the box. Not cheap, but nothing better.

Sounds good until you are wrestling with a 100lb cylinder on ice and snow...

ended up scoring a propane wall heater with 2 100lb tanks locally for $150 so planning to go that route for now. tanks will be on the side of the garage and easy to access so moving them in the snow isnt really an issue. 30K btu, also came with regulator for tanks and a bunch of copper tubing that im not going to re-use. planning to hook everything up when i get done with siding the house and garage hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

any advice as far as hooking it up. planning on a short run, tanks on one side of the wall heater on the other. im aware that humidity/ moisture may be an issue with a ventless heater so should i invest in a dehumidifier to help keep the tools from rusting or should it be ok in the winter?

Humidity, moisture and toxic fumes........all bad if your going to run the heater all the time.

It maybe cheap..........but not a good idea for regular use, open the window or door , run a dehumidifier both waste heat and energy.
One more strike, NG is dirt cheap compared to propane.

Suspect the seller sold it for those exact reasons ??????

I wouldn't even consider LP/propane. Around here it cost many times per BTU what NG costs, I moved my shop a few years ago because NG was not available at the last location. Propane nearly broke the bank.

8' to the bottom of the heater is code here when a vehicle is parked inside, in case it develops a fuel leak.

You're fine with a power vented unit that hugs the ceiling, don't even consider a non-vented unit.
