I've been trying to get quotes for attached garage heater in Chicago suburbs. I believe it should be a rather simple install as the natural gas line is within a couple of feet of desired location and worst case for electric would be ~20 feet of conduit along the wall. I've been having trouble finding people interested in the job, but first quote I received was $3,500 for a Reznor UDAP-45. Looking online, looks like the heater is about $900 so if I'm being generous probably talking $1,500 in total materials (installler said it was closer to $2,000 in materials). $1.5-2k seems a little rich for what I'd imagine is several hours of work especially as I get the feeling this is an off the books job. Would love the contact of any installers in the Chicagoland who may be more reasonable in rates.

Thanks,

I agree with the roughly $1500 in materials including heater. Add a day of labor for a slow worker to hang, run the conduit, extend the gas line and install the horizontal vent through the wall. Your offer of $537 cash should attract a local DIYer. A licensed plumber gas fitter will want twice that. Labor prices also depend on where you live. Might be 4x as much as your $537 in SF.

I installed that exact unit myself over the past summer. My NG and electric were already nearby (had it roughed in when house was built). Due to the vaulted ceiling I had to fabricate a custom mount to hang it. The CAT III horizontal vent was the greatest expense after the heater itself (About $250 at Menards). I have about $1100 total invested and my labor time.

Here are my costs, taken from the original HD 45k install and I added and adjusted what I had to buy for the current 75K intall:

Heater: $575.00
B Vent Kit: $63.75
New B-Vent Elbow: $23.80
Thermostat: $20.05
Tstat Wire: $8.00
Black Roof Caulk: $6.00
Clear Silicon: $10.00 (2 tubes, one for each install)
Wiring & Flexible Conduit: $15.00
Plug: $12.00 (1 for each heater)
Black Pipe/Flex Line/Fittings/Dope/Valves/Hangers: $405

Total: $1,130.60

Then, take off the $450 that I sold my old HD 45K for, (that i got for free) and the new grand total for the install will be:

$680.60

I would say I am forgetting some small items here and there, but I know for a fact the total heater and install parts was way under $750 for everything

Do it yourself, it's not hard at all to install these

I helped a friend install a 45k in his garage with a horizontal vent and the total cost with parts and the heater was $1,000
