I have a shop with two separate areas for heating needs. One area is 20 by 28 with a 22 ft ceiling c/w a 10 ft garage door. I will be putting a two post hoist in this area. Second is a "man cave" beside the hoist area that is 20 by 28 as well except for a 12 ft ceiling height. Fan(s) will be installed in the hoist area as well. I will be using Modine Hot Dawg units (power exhausted model) HD due to a family contact with great pricing. Also any comments on cat 3 venting would help as I plan to run the vents inside the floor trusses as there is a second level that will be unheated. 2 by 6 fully insulated walls and roof will be in place as well. What sizing will suffice for Canadian winters in each area.

20x28 with a 22' ceiling? That's almost as high as it is wide/deep. No room for a mezzanine.

Do you really need that much height is such a small space? I'd think 16' would be more than enough, 12' would probably fit the bill. I've got 12' ceilings in my 32x40 and have found it more than enough for my needs.

Sounds like you've already decided on heater type and make. So you're just looking for info on BTU and placement?

The whole "shop" is 40 by 52 two story with ground level 12 ft ceiling. Second floor is 8 ft ceiling with the exclusion of the "hoist"area 20 by 28 by 22ft. Agreed that is quite high but that's the reality of the dimensions. YES I am looking for BTU's and placement in each area. All other areas of shop are un heated.

Ah. Makes much more sense now.

So it's the areas labeled "Garage" and "Workshop" that you want to heat?
Will the walls between heated and unheated locations be insulated?

Only heating "auto shop" and "workshop". Not my terms, insert Hoist and party room as required. Garage and second floor are cold storage. Everything will be insulated, with sliding barn door in-between "auto shop" and "workshop".

Alright, I'd recommend 75-80kBTU unit in the auto shop due to the high ceiling and 45-50k in the workshop.

It's hard to recommend placement without knowing details about what else will be in the space and how the space will be used regularly other than to say that the heater in the autoshop should be hung as low as possible. Ideally at 10 or 12'. Otherwise, just think about the pattern of air movement and remember that for maximum comfort you'll want to place the heater near the biggest source of heat loss AKA in the coldest part of the room which will likely be near your overhead doors.

Thanks. I was going with the exact units you recommend as well as mounting height. I needed a reality check.

I like your style! The car looks beautiful. I'm only 90 min away near Kelowna.

Mine's a 1970 Grande w Turbocharged 351W.

Good luck with your build!
