Heater size?

Hello all, I am building a 40x40 pole building with 10 ft. ceiling. R30 in ceiling, R19 walls. Live in NE PA. Was thinking of going with a Modine Hot Dawg 60K BTU propane heater. Can any of you heat system guru's out there advise on this? Good or bad? Bigger or smaller? I would plan to keep the garage at 45-50 degrees in the colder months if that matters. Just want to be as efficient as I can. Thank you!!

I heat a 30x40 shop building with a 80k Mr. Heater. I used to have a 45k but it took too long to heat it up. I wanted to be able to go in, turn it on, and have it nice and comfortable in 20 mins. I am in a little warmer climate than you and slightly less insulation in the ceiling.

I think I'd do an 80k if it was me but I bet 60k will still heat it ok.

I wouldn't go too big if mostly your heat is maintenance levels . . . ie around 50 degrees.

Find one of the Size Calculators and input all your variables like measurements, ceiling height, garage doors, windows, and insulation. Search prior GJ threads as lots of calculators out there. Here's easy way to search deep into prior GJ threads:

As a guess, I'd say 60K to 75K would be plenty if what you mostly want is low level heat maintenance through the winter with good insulation. You really don't need the fast recovery of the 80K Btu heater, unless you are opening and closing doors all the time.

I'm about 60 miles SE of you. I have a 30x40x10 with R19 in the Ceiling and R13 in the walls, a 18x9 and a 10x9 insulated garage doors. I am running a Modine Hot Dawg 75K propane 2 stage separate combustion chamber unit. Set at 50 all the time and I turn it up to 66 when in use. Reaches temp in about 30-45 minutes even during some of our coldest days this winter so far. I have 2 ceiling fans that I run which help out great.
