Hi everyone
I've got a 800 sq ft garage that I'm thinking about installing a Mr Heater Big Maxx 45000 btu heater, but I have seen on this web site people are having problems with them.Is there any better units out there for around the same price Tractor Supply has them for 399.00.Also I would like to run the pipe out the side instead of going through the roof or is it better to run it out the roof.
If I install this can someone tell me what size gas line to run its around 35 to 40 ft from where I can connect into gas line coming into my house.I'm planning on running the flex pipe instead of blk steel gas pipe.

Thanks

The Mr. Heater Big Maxx heaters are very popular and 100's of thousands are sold. Im sure many of the units that you hear problems about are usually incorrectly installed or improperly adjusted. I hear of plenty of satisfied customers. Earlier models did have control board issues though.
Other similar and popular heaters are the Modine Hot Dawgs which have a pretty good reputation but you will pay a bit more for them.

The vertical vent is more prefered and recomended although the horizontal can operate as good as long as it is properly installed per the manufacturer.

You should check with your local and state codes on what is required for your installation.

As stated above, most problems are due to incorrect installation. Most of the garage hanging heaters are basically the same thing, not much difference to them. I prefer roof venting as there are less problems to deal with. Most are installed horizontally illegally, not proper clearances, etc.
I installled the Hot Dawg in my dad's garage 10 yrs ago, no problems at all.

I think i heard some of the Lowe's stopped carrying/stocking them. Maybe able to still special order. I think the next cheapest is Northern Tool.

I installed a Big Maxx 75k last year, and during the test runs, the ciruit board fried. They sent me a new improved one. Later, the 100# propane tank ran out, and a temp sensor burned out because of it. They sent me a new one. This year, the shop is all insulated, and I have a 120 gallon tank outside, so I'll be able to give it a good test. Mine exhausts out the back wall (no doors, windows or eaves nearby); no problems during the tests last season.
