I am looking to heat my new shop in the Seattle area - not terribly cold in winter and no need for a/c in summer. Shop is 32x28x10 pole building by Spane w/ the insulation they use for metal siding. Comp roof so I am on my own there. Plywood walls and ceiling w/ no insulation in attic space as of yet. I am looking at 5k-7.5k watt electric heaters at this point. Gas will be too expensive to get out to shop. I was thinking pellet stove but unless electric turns into a bust I really don't want to give up the footprint for a stove. Anyone have experience with King heaters? I am looking into a KBP2406 $299 Amazon or Lowes, or a GH2407TB.

Bring out propane tank??

I live in NW as well and leaning towards doing a ductless heat pump
I had propane insert in my old house, wasn't much of a fan. Propane prices around here fluctuate too much depending on vendor, time of year, day of month, alignment of planets, etc, etc.

For a mild climate like yours an 18-24,000 BTU mini split would heat fine while the cost to run it would be 15-20 bucks a month if that.

There are some excellent rebates on mini-splits in your territory. Check with the utility. You don't need cooling...until you do;)

that was my original thought but after building was up I was thinking I didn't want to give the square footage. If the electric doesn't pan out I am likely going with a pellet stove. Need to get all moved in to see how the layout shapes up.

Pellets are in my experience a pitn. The are cost effective if you buy in bulk, but a bag here and a bag there and they loose that benefit. They require regular maintenance. Also, the footprint is pretty large. My shop is 960 sq ft so close to yours. My normal suggestion for heat only is the Rinnai EX-38LP. You don't say how you intend to heat the place as far as keeping it up to temp or just when you are out there, but the way to make LP cost effective is to buy your own tank of sufficient size to get you through the season. That could be a 250 or a 420. That way you are not riding the market, or the market is not riding you. You control the buy. Electric resistance heating even in the NW is pricey. If you were to go electric, the mini-split will pay for itself in a couple years over your suggested 5-7 kw units.

It will only be heated when I am out there. More time on weekends than during the week. I am not in current house garage often when it is cold (under 40) and do use a small portable propane heater out there at times just to take the chill out. I will likely use this shop more as there will be more room for projects. Certainly more time will be spent after retirement but that is a ways off. More looking for something in the short term as I am over budget by more than I like.:)

I am in Oregon and have a 60x25x10 that is currently being built. I plan on going with a mini-split. Looked into propane and it just didn't make sense.

If the shop was more climate friendly, I bet you would be out there more often. :)

I don't seem to think it does too much,,,unless your standing close to it.
According to this app, mine cost about a dollar and hour to run.
my cost is $.12 per kwh
