Heating/Air conditioning Zones Code?

Got a question that I am not sure what the answer is.

I have a garage that has an upstairs that is only for storage. I want to heat and cool the upstairs and heat and cool the garage.

I have heard you cannot heat and cool a garage and the upstairs with the same unit. Is this true?

Do we have any HVAC guys that can talk to this?

I have considered a mini-split system to zone control the garage separate from the upstairs, but this has thrown a wrench in the thought process should should it be true.

Any thoughts?

That is what my thoughts are but I was told since the unit uses one heat pump that it was not legal. I would need two desperate units....

I am 99% sure there is no truth to that. Could be some strange law passed by a one member city council in a small town in California maybe.:D

You would not want to use conventional ducted equipment because you would end up mixing the garage air with the upstairs areas air.

A dual head mini split should pose no problem, ask your local inspector to be 100% sure but I can't think of a reason that they would have a issue with it.

Is the upstairs part of of the house? If it is not part of the house and it will only be used for storage, I can't imagine why you couldn't use the same unit. Especially if you are going to use a dual-head mini-split. Even if the upstairs storage was part of the main house I still don't see why you couldn't use the mini-split option.
