I am almost finished building my new 50x50 work shop and am wondering what would be the best type of heating/ AC to use. Unfortunately I did not think to put pex in the slab when it was poured to radiant is out of the question.

Would a 4 ton resendential type unit be my best bet with a single trunk line running down the middle of the shop?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

To size heating and cooling systems for your shop you will need to do a heat loss calculation. These calculations take into account climate, insulation value, windows sizes, building size and a number of other factors. Search for the most in depth free load calculator you find on the Internet and use that

I have mentioned it before but you can submit your info to the guys at www.ecomfort.com and they will load calc it for free. They use a 3rd party service but its very detailed, professionally prepared and the price cant be beat.

What is your location (put it in your profile).

Is this one open space or partitioned ? What is the construction ? How tall is i ? Insulation ?

In most climates, a premium quality mini-split heat pump as the lowest cost of operation. With a building your size, you will need 4 air handlers. More expensive to install, but cheaper to operate and no ducting.

Thank you for all of the input, I will do a heat loss calculation and go frm there.

I am located in Southern Illinois. Next week I will be studding out the inside walls and applying spray foam insulation on the walls and roof deck. The shop is a 10' tall pole barn with metal siding and roof. It is one large open space with no windows, it has two 18'x8 insulated garage doors, 1 12x12 insulated sliding door and one insulated walk through door...

in my garage condo we have a hung from the ceiling non ducted unit it does the job if the doors are closed. i think its a 7 ton unit?

One unit will leave a lot of hot/cold spots in a 50x50.

Re thinking my earlier post, 2 complete mini-split heat pumps, each with 2 air handlers, would be better. That would keep the refrigerant runs down to about 30'.

Good quality mini-split heat pumps will make heat down to below zero,

A properly sized mini-split is the answer.

I installed radiant ceilings in my shop and radiant walls and radiant slabs and wall-hung radiators and mini-splits...but that's just me :).
