I am building a 52 x 56 x 16 pole barn that will have 2 paneled overhead doors. I live in the Northern Virginia area and am trying to decide what type of heating and cooling system/s I should go with. In my last garage (which was MUCH smaller) I had a Reznor propane heater for heating and a Mitsubishi split system for cooling. I normally kept that garage @ 60 degrees during the winter and only cooled it when I was out in it with the door closed. In the new shop...I am considering keeping it at a constant 50 to 55 during the winter (bumping to 60-62 when I am using it) and keeping at 78 during the summer. With such a large space...not sure if I should go with a Heat Pump to do both or separate systems like I had previously. I could also augment the cooling aspect with on e of the big overhead shop fans

If you are considering a heat pump, what will be your heat source?

I recall a reading about a farmer who heated his milking parlor with a heat pump using a large decomposing manure pile as the heat source.
